Ok, so I am no stranger to the 7.3 Diesel - I have a 97 F350 with the 7.3 and I am in love. Now I am looking at adding a '99 E350 7.3 to my roster and I need to know what you guys know about the engines that came in the vans.

Any quirks that are van specific?

Any differences in design?

Any differences in tuning? I have heard they are de-tuned from the truck version...

Can a guy get a chip from DP-Tuner or PHP just as easy as the trucks?

Any known issues that I outta look for that are van specific items?

It has 150k on it and the stock trans is still going strong however I know its gotta be about to crap its pants. There is a massive fuel leak down the back of the block but I am guessing that's a fuel bowl seal... been there done that.

Please feel free to spill your guts, I need more intel on the van platform before I dive in but time is scarce - this is a hard to find rig and I don't want to miss it! Thanks in advance.

1. IDM's fail alot due to location
2. Oil cooler /exhaust manifolds/ Valve Covers/ Intakes are all different
3. They are slightly de-tuned ( 215)
4. Absolutely
5. Ball Joints / Radius Arm Bushings/ Glow Plug Relay is PITA to change.....Throw Resonator Away and replace with a 2" PVC pipe and Cap ..and you need to be a contortionist to work on it..Only thing EASY to do is Turbo removal...Injector Service is NOT fun....Removing the seats helps a little....

Now I am wondering if going the 5.4 route would be a better idea?... The lower power and crap fuel economy make it hard to do though. But if the 7.3 vans are that gnarly to work on, then who knows what the better choice is? I thought about a kenne bell or a whipple on the 5.4 to compensate for the power deficit but I don't think that'll do much positive for fuel economy.

Well If you are a Gearhead like me..Then go 7.3....I love the Torque......5.4 is good if you are not Towing/ Hauling every day.....Thats where you see the difference....towing Heavy / Hauling Heavy...ETC....If you want to do Burnouts.... get a V10 with 5 Star Tuning...I will still Destroy it Towing , BUT off the Line ..the V10 will walk me...for now....5.4 Not so Much......
