So i recently moved and my new commute is 62 miles round trip a day. It is 80mph for 40 miles and 60mph for 20. Only a few stoplights but i do get stuck in stop and go traffic for 10-15 minutes in the morning.
My current vehicle is a 2010 5.4l f250 and i am stuck at 14mpg on this commute (goes down a bit in winter)
Looking at this truck
Trading my 2010 would get me around ~20k so id be 13 in the hole.
I need to know a realistic number for fuel economy for the f150 based on my usage to make a trade worthwhile i would need to get over 20 which i doubt is likely.
I run 20k a year
F250 20,000/14mpg x 3.75== 5375$
F150 20000/20mpg x 3.75 == 3750$
So even at 20mpg i would save 1600$ a year which would take 10years to cover the price difference not to mention higher property tax and insurance....
I guess maybe the new lighter 150 might be able to do a bit better on mileage. another issue in the back of my mind Is the 5.4 is a very proven motor as far as lingevity and maintnance costs. The ecobost has not yet proven itself and due to increased complexity i cant imagine it being as low cost maintnance as the 5.4. I know i dont want 2 cars again. Virginia has high cost to own for cars and even a 40mpg coffin wouldnt net me enough to make it worthwhile. I
My .2 cents .... Keep you're truck and find a smaller car that gets great mpg for you're commute. Running 80 in a EB won't get 20+ mpg Unless it is a 2wd Rcsb with 3.15 gears or so.
For $$ reasons only I would keep what I have and keep buying gas. I have an 85 mile round trip commute in an Escape that gets 22 mpg and have played the same game in my head as you. When I do the math I cannot save money by trading in a car that is paid off to get one with better fuel economy. I also hear you on a second car. By the time you figure in tags and insurance for another car you rarely save any money going that route either. To give you another baseline on MPG my wife's truck gets 22 mpg when I drive it to work, but it is all two lane highway 45-55 mph with one red light. On the interstate at 80 mph the mpg drops to 19 mpg.
Looks like you spec's it out with 3.55s, but take a read of that thread and think about 3.31s instead.
Is there any reason you need the torque of the ecoboost? If you're really concerned about mileage, the base V6 is a very solid engine, with respectable power numbers for it's displacement:
Have a 9500 lb travel trailer. I think the f150 would be marginial with that weight anyway and definently wouldnt want the little motor also. I think the 3.55 would do better and i really wish my current truck had a locker!!! I have a little hobby farm and the f250 is pretty unimpressive off road. Needs 4wd for wet grass and if its been raining i cant go off the driveway .
The only way a second car can work is a cheapo beater and i honestly dont want to sit in a crappy econobox for 90minutes a day!!!
I know the 80mph thing... But i get as much overtime as i want (more than i want actually) so the extra gas i burn is more than made up by the extra time on the clock.
So i think we all know the real answer to this is a motorcycle!!!! And it gets me into the HOV lanes also!!!!!

That is exactly what I did, motorcycle is my daily driver to work (except winter). Even when going for a "spirited" ride i get mid 30s MPG, while best is 45MPG highway (the V4 is a thirsty engine for a bike)
I agree somewhat ...my back up vehicle is a 98 ford Escort 5 speed that gets 35 mpg while running 80. That car saved my butt when I was commuting 140+ miles everyday. At that time I had a 05 Srw F350 Fx4 6.0 psd that got a whopping 10 mpg. Lol

I wish i still had my escort zx2!! That thing was the cheapest per mile car i ever had. I think i remember paying under 10k for it brand new
Yeah mine belonged to my mom before she passed and knowing my tight wadded mom she didnt pay much over 10k. That Lil ZX2 rips for what it is and I won't ever git rid if it either
Try to find another one - they are everywhere for sale around me, granted most of them look like they have been drop shipped from a 747 ..... Lol but you know they are a simple car to work on and dang cheap to drive.

Just wanted to offer some perspective. The F150 is NOT marginal with a 9,500 lb trailer as long as it's equipped right. Of course that requires the max tow package which hurts your fuel economy; I see an average of 17.5-19 on the highway with mine. Curb weight has very little to do with highway fuel economy; it's all about wind resistance and driveline efficiency. And just to nitpick, the EcoBoost is the smallest engine available.
