Shocks

FYI . After reading about shocks, I called to order the rancho shocks for my 2013 f230 fx4. I called my salesman prior and learned that my truck came with them from factory. I looked to verify and that's what I had. Advice: look before you order.

Your truck came with "Rancho-branded" shocks. They are the same shocks as the trucks without the FX4 package except for a white paint job and the Rancho sticker.

A lot of people on this forum have upgraded to the Rancho 9000xl's or Bilstein 5100's.

The Ford branded Rancho is the equivalent of Rancho 5000. The 5000 series is marginal for these trucks. Too small in my opinion. Please believe those of us who have shcit canned the stock FX4 shocks. They are not the same as RS9000 or Bilstein HD or 5100. And also consider the RS7000, but don't waste your money on RS5000.

The Bilstein 4600 series is a cheaper alternative to the 5100 series.

I have the RS5000's...I don't think they are bad for driving unloaded, but I regret not going for the 9000's or 5100 HD's.

Got my new rancho 9000s installed yesterday. The difference is night and day. I can't believe how much smoother it rides !!! I recommend to anyone driving a 4x4

I think you'll find your answer in this thread. The preferred names have already been given.

Heavy loads don't make much difference on shocks. Running empty is probably harder on shocks that a heavy load. What matters on shocks is rapid actuation, and how the shock handles that. If you off-road a lot, you'll want a better shock than an all highway usage. Although, the roads are so bad these days, sometimes it seems like you're driving off-road on the interstate.

I have been complety happy with my Bilstein HD (4600 models). I off-road some, but I don't drive fast off-road. If I did, stepping up to the Bilstein 5100 would be better, which they call a racing shock. But I think if I was buying today, I would go with that Rancho 9000, so that I could dial in the exact ride that I wanted. I won't be buying though, because these have a lifetime warranty. You can't go wrong with any of these.
