Serpentine conversion VS double V belts
Serpentine conversion VS double V belts
heres the problem, I need more traction from my belt to drive my alternator without it squealing.
ive been looking for some old double groove pulleys so I could run double v belts, but finding the RIGHT ones just isn't happening for less than $150. so I got to thinking about robbing some serpentine pulleys off a newer SBF, but I don't know if they'll fit my old 351C engine. I have the capabilities to modify something that's close so that's fine. but my main objective here is to get something with better driving power than my current single v belt...
I only have my crank water pump and alternator on this engine, so if I can find the right pulleys this will be an easy swap.
before I head off to the JY to look for what I need, has anyone done this? all I need is a little bit more traction. it only squeals at start up, but it does squeal badly at times... and my junkyard is closed right now and wont be opening until who knows when. (does anyone know when the new LKQ on 56th street in chandler will open?)

Go rob what you need off a late 80's 5.0 Crown Vic, Lincoln Towncar or Merc Marquis. These all ran a two belt std rotation waterpump (no reverse rotation pump available for the Cleveland that I know of to do a true serpentine conversion) with flat ribbed belts. The crank pulley is a two sheeve giving you two belt spacings to work with. One belt drove the alternator and P/S pump, the other the smog and A/C compressor.
Not an authority, have you determined which pulleys you are looking for? Had similar issue and found when I went to a 3 sheave pulley I did not replace the other pulley(s) that made up a match set; thus, even using combination of spacers and washers the belt alignment was slightly off. Subsequently found the pulleys come in a combination of match sets; in my case, took the part number from the crank and water pump and with those numbers found which pulleys went with what? Ended up having the option of either replacing the crank or water pump pulley to make a set; oh what an improvement!! Imagine once determine which pulleys; years and model engine, then one can either go with FOMOCO, or serpentine; perhaps more knowledgeable member can advise???
no I don't know what pulleys I need, that's part of the problem too. I have a bunch of them laying around, and I tried putting together what I need, but I don't have what I need....
I only need crank and WP pulleys if I do v belts, I have a double alt pulley already.
serpentine pulleys would work too. the belt would just run the same way the v belt does...
