So, got my 89 back from the exhaust shop. drove it home no problems. I come out side to show my brother and It wont start. I have a gauge on the fuel rail and its stuck at 0 when you crank it. I smell no gas, and i cant hear the pump come on. Keep in mind i JUST got done puting a new crate motor in it.
SO now im thinking that since i have to pull off the bed to get to the pump, why not just put a cell in the bed? The truck doesnt see snow, and the tank is prettty rusty down there anyway.
Which can i use? I was looking on summit and got confused real quick. I think it would be nice to put a nice 20 gallon tank in the bed, and por 15 the rear of the frame while im there.
Fuel cells are illegal in most states. that's a pretty good reason not to have one.
This garbage we call 'fuel' will eat up the foam baffle material, polluting the entire fuel delivery system with debris. Another good reason not to have one.
A new 'legal' replacement tank from LMC is less than 1/2 the price of an illegal fuel cell. A third good reason not to have one.
I wouldn't install a fuel cell in your truck. You will lose most of your usable bed space, and it will cost quite a bit more then a factory replacement.
If your dead set on swapping to a fuel cell, I can try and find the P/N for the cell I used in the back of my old trail rig.
Just get a replacement tank and straps and be done with it. Check all the fuses and relays before condemning the pump, and make sure you're getting voltage back there as well.
I think he is in Canada. Isn't that where Windsor is? Either way sounds like a crazy idea to me. Why have a pickup with no bed to use. Just trade it in on a car. Then you don't have to buy a fuel cell either. Nor diagnose what the real problem is.

Yeah, I'm with these guys. Buy yourself a replacement tank and straps. Also, you don't need to take the bed off to get to the tank. You can just drop the tank. I've dropped tanks several times with no issues. Just make sure it's close to empty so you don't have too much weight there.
I want to pull the bed off, box the frame and make bigger crossmembers and i dont know, i like the fact of the tank being higher up because i wheel her pretty often. If i need to use the bed, i have a trailer and a cell isnt that big, you can get one that fits under your tool box.... thats just using wasted space..
I found the fuel relay and i blew in it, (people told me thats a old trick) but nothing happened. Ill check the fuse in the morning. is that in the cab?
P.s. how do you drop the tank? I have a 90 f350 idi frame in the backyard, and everything is stripped off it except for the rear tank because i couldnt figure it out. Its like in there so perfect lol the sides of the tank sit on the frame.
I've never removed a tank from a brick nose, but the last time I removed a tank, it was nestled in like you describe. I had to lift up one side of the tank while pushing down on the other side of the tank. Took some wiggling but it came out. One bit of advice I can give that helped me. After you disconnect the filler neck and remove the straps, run a ratchet strap back and forth a few times between the frame rails hanging a few inches under the tank. This saved me from a fuel tank falling on my head. It was my first time dropping a tank and I was alone. I figured it might be a good idea to put something under it in case I lost my grip. Glad I did. Its better to get some dirt out of your eyes than a falling hunk of metal with old gas in it out of your broken nose and bloody forehead.

Yeah, I put jack stands underneath to drop a tank. They'll help to keep it from falling when it comes loose.

Bigger cross members and box the frame? FOR WHAT? Are you making a sled puller out of it? If no, not need what so ever.
As for dropping the rear tank. Unbolt the bottom straps, then loosen the top straps. Pickup on side of the tank and shove it to that side. Then drop the other side out. It is Not hard. If you are worried about the tank getting smash, just put in a factory skid plate

Oh im SORRY, I forgot I was under the impression that this was my truck, not yours? To each his own. Im doing it because I want to. That's why. Because both of my obs fords, ( 90 f350 idi, 87 f250) Both of the frames had cracks. And this one is a beautiful truck that I wont let die on me.
