One side of my engine the electrodes on each of the spark plugs are rough, with a dark spot on the ceramic. I didn't check the plugs on the other side of the engine. I did those a few weeks earlier and threw them out. I used the platinum Champion $6.00 plugs. The engine was misses sometimes at idle. I found these reasons online
Over-advanced ignition timing
Too lean fuel mixture
Excessive deposits accumulated in combustion chamber
I would use motocraft plugs, did the plugs fix the missing ?
If not go ahead and check the rest of the tune up stuff
Cap rotor wires , fuel filter and replace as needed also check for vacuum leaks
1. Yes, agreed. You'd have a code if it was lean, and it would also run hotter.
2. If you have carbon buildup, you'll also generally hear pre-ignition (pinging) under medium to heavy throttle and heavy load. If you hear it, time for some Seafoam or ATF or even just plain water to clean it out. Search or start a new thread for how to do it.
3. Yup, get it hot enough and it'll start pinging like in item 2, which can be caused by running lean as in item 1.
4. Did you change plugs to one with a different heat range? The length of the ceramic insulator on the plug determines it's heat dissipation capability, it's a heat sink as much as it is a HV insulator.
