I stopped at a friends house today to take a look at his X. To mt surprise there is no real gain in storage behind the 3rd row, maybe 2 or 3 inches; and the 3rd seat is slightly smaller because of the spare tire. Are all X's the same, the body didn't change from year to year? The Expy is just cursed with a 1/2 ton suspension and a 5.4 triton.

That is correct; the Excursion looks to be much bigger from the outside, but I also found the interior disappointing.
the expy has more useable height while vehicle height is lower due to its IRS and its unibody (or something along that line) construction that is different from the ex. as for length maybe the hood is less space with that tiny V8 and so they stretched everything else
your also only looking at room behind the 3rd row (from your posts wording) maybe its wider?

I don't know anything about the expedition but the most important thing for me was the excursion's frame. around here if it's not on a real frame, the dirt, snow and gravel just eat it up. My element lasted a few months before the electronics started giving us issues. Seems cars and trucks on real frames just seem to do better than unibodies.
I just rented an Expedition EL for a trip today and I found the rear storage room a lot less accomodating. I cannot fit full size 28" suitcases back there and the "Few Inches" of difference are "Miles of Difference" when you are packing bags and luggage back there. Also, the 15.9 mpg I got while never exceeding 75 mph that turned me off. When my Ex gets back from the stereo shop, I will enjoy full loading capability and my 19.7 mpg on the highway.
gonna have to disagree that the Expy EL has more trunk room. When I first saw this post I was confused. I didn't remember my 2008 Expy EL having that much trunk room compared to the X. I have to step on the bumper to reach all the way into my "trunk" in the X. In the EL I could reach everything with feet on the ground.
A quick hop onto Kelly Blue Book for some tech specs and I got this. 2005 X vs. a 2009 Expy EL vs. a 2008 Expy (shorty).
X is the clear winner for "trunk" space. I wonder if that's calculated with the tire or not? I'm betting more space would be allocated the X with the tire removed.
sorry for the poor image quality. I'm not sure what happened with the upload. it's 146.6 cubic feet in X vs. 130.8 cubic feet in the EL. That's pretty significant
I did see those numbers. I was like holy sh**, the X has 16 more cubic feet. That's what prompted me to go check it out. It is slightly bigger but I'm not quite sure where the 16 cubic ft is. I had bought a tape measure with me. From the base of the 3rd row to the in side molding of the barn door was only 3" longer then the Expy EL. I also measured from the top of the barn doors to the back of the seat to account for the angle of the seat. That was 6" shorter then from the base; the Expy EL had a similar deviation. Listen fellas I'm not trying to bash X, I was looking to buy one. But now I'm unsure as I'm not seeing the 16 extra cubic ft I was looking for.
I never cared much for "cubic feet". All I ever go by in a 4x8 sheet of plywood and how that fits in vehicles. To my surprise with all the rear seats down and out the X has the same square floor footage (4x8 fit) as my mini van.
The Expy El or X is for my wife and 5 kids. I have my F250 that I use for the dirty stuff
Wow, sounds like space is a priority for you!
I have two kids with one on the way, and space for car seats was one of my top priorities. Karri and I looked at just about everything under the sun with three rows, including the Expedition, and we settled on the Toyota Sienna. It's AWD, has more usable space in the interior than anything we've tried including my Excursion, and is great on gas.
Whew....it's a good thing they can't ban me for saying that!
Space is a huge issue for us. Our kids are 6,4,3, 16 months and a newborn. That's 4 car seats and a booster seat. That's why I was looking at the excursion. We keep a double stroller and a single stroller behind the 3rd row, leaving minimal extra space. I was hoping to gain space in an X but I'm not seeing it. Our Expy el has 125k on it and needs about $2500+ worth of work (exhaust manifolds, struts all around, and a leaky power steering cooler). Life is just never easy
