I have a 99 SD 250 4x4 7.3L. My dad is considering buying a 2003 7.3 L SD 250. He is really hung up on getting a LSD, but no trucks on the lots have the LSD, and the trucks MUST be on the dealers' lots to qualify for that fat rebate.
The question is.... I know that others have successfully swapped to LSD in their diffs. How hard is that, how detailed is it? Is it just a matter of swapping the ring gear and the pinion gear? If so, what size should we look for in the junkyard, and how to identify which trucks have it.
Let me get this straight, You are going to put a junk yard limited slip diff (unknown milage or abuse) into a brand new truck?? Why a junk yard unit?? If your dad wants the added traction that badly then get a REAL dif like a detroit locker. Limited slips use friction discs that wear out with usage like your brakes. A deiroit locker doesn't use friction material that wears out, and it works real well.
It was only a consideration to get one salvage from those places that specialize in really late model (1-2 years old) crash and salvage. And that was only a consideration and floating it out there.
Also, there was a consideration on doing that to my 99 (4 years old) as well.
