So where is everyone finding the correct coolant to purchase for the 6.7? I was wanting to get some to have on board anyway but today I noticed I am down just a bit in the primary degas bottle.
Bought it from the Ford dealer - get the concentrate and buy distilled water. It mixes 50/50 and where I deal they don't even bring in the premix coolant at all - cheaper to buy the concentrate and dilute it. You end up with 2 gallons of coolant for 25% more than the price of 1 gallon of premix.
Make sure you buy the right product as the recommended coolant has changed for the 6.7L diesel when introduced for 2011 and up models. It's orange coloured - up here it comes in a reddish orange 4L jug. VC-3-B in the USA, ours is CVC-3-B in Canada. As I mentioned - don't buy the premix - VC-3DIL-B (diluted) - cheaper to buy concentrated.
The correct stuff has to use OAT (organic acid technology). The way it was described to me, is the OAT actually "eats" into the coolant passages, eventually forming a coating that prevents the "sand leaching" that we're all familiar with.
Wow, that is interesting. Thanks for the part numbers and the tip. Im testing my coolant today using the kit. The cooling system(s) work really good on this truck
With my 6.4 I could buy the Ford spec coolant at Napa.
So guess maybe dealer only for now
Yes there is a Ford Gold coolant replacement, but with these ELC coolants the chemistry's are different between brands, so I wouldn't take the risk of having a chemical compatibility issue.
Pure OAT coolants are far different from the Hybrid OAT (Golden stuff) and Green coolant that you typically see at parts stores. I've personally been having a harder time finding coolant for newer vehicles that use pure OAT. The only common pure OAT out there is DEXCOOL which meets the specs on some other manufacturers as well for an OAT. I believe the Ford owner's manual has a Spec on there for Coolants (I remember seeing something on my F150), should be WSS-XXXXX-XXX or something like that. If you can find a coolant that shows it meets Ford's spec that's in your owner's manual, then you should be good to go. Maybe it's in the diesel supplement.

Yes the diesel supplement has the spec you are indicating. I have it written down now and will check the bottle before purchase.
Be sure and put in the right one. My wife managed to knock a hole in the radiator after a minor rear end collision. The collision center put in the green. I took it to Ford and they had to flush the system following the "contaminated system" procedure to keep the warranty in place. The collision center footed the bill at $700. They got a lower price as they had an account with this Ford dealer. Retail would have been over $1300. Yeah I was shocked too.
I picked up 2 gallons of VC-3-B Diluted today.. put in a little over a quart to take my degas level back to proper setting. we leave tomorrow on the 3000 mile trip to Michigan and back with a 5th wheel. paid $12.80 per gallon.
(may I never open the bottle again!)
why would you need to carry coolant around with you for a new truck? do they leak or use it somehow? sounds like a serious issue to me. I would expect to never have to add coolant to mine anytime between new and the recommended flush date unless a hose broke or something.
