I thought hard about it and my 2003 Expedition has its piping behind the tire and I noticed that over time the kicked up rocks and dirt wore down the tip from its shine. This time when I did my 2009 F150 I had it go straight back so that the Stainless had less chance of abrasive wear down. Even the Chrome tip that I sold off my 2009 after I did dual had some abrasive wear. So unless you have mud flaps going I wouldn't go behind the tire.
