I have a 92 F-250 4x4 auto with a 460 that has 100K on it. When it is cold it starts and idles fine. Once it has been warmed up, when I try to restart it, it takes excessive cranking and when it starts it idles rough, almost like it was over-choked. There is no smoke in the exhaust and it doesn't smell rich at all. Once up to speed, it runs fine and will even pull my travel trailer with no problem until I bring it back to idle. I took it to a local shop and there were no codes showng, but they replaced the fuel filter, plugs, wires, and cap. Any ideas as to what may be causing this?
hey i was haveing a similar problem on my 429 but it has a carb come to find out it was vapor lock ..and i changed my fuel filter and everything and that didnt seem to work so i ended up switching to a high volume fuel pump and then it pretty much solved the problem but i have to wait until this summer to see if it will do it again when the temps really get up more. i was also told that vapor lock occurs on the low side of the fuel pump from the tank to the fuel pump..so i would just look at the fuel lines running all the way from the tank to the engine compartment and if there is some rubber in there feel it to see if its flemsy...or soft because it could be getting hot enough to kinda starve the engine at idle but then when you move you are getting air to circulate around the the lines and would be less likely to get it that hot ..but hope this helps some
