E4OD Finally Gave Up
Last week, my TC clutch started slipping. I went on Craigslist and found someone parting out a super duty with ZF.
Long story short....bought the truck, loaded it up, got 24 miles (my house was 1.5 more frigin miles!) and poof!
TC overheated, melted the seal and blew all the fluid out onto the road. No tickets but it cost me $245 to get the rest of the way home.
Roll back driver was a douche too. Future part time town cop I'm sure!
The tranny may actually be OK. I filled it up and was able to move the whole rig (my 1994 super duty mason dump and 5 ton trailer with another super duty on it) down back so it's not right in my driveway where everyone can stare at it.
ATF pretty much pours right out the inspection cover tube.
So I have a complete 1988 cab and chassis with unknown condition running gear (7.3 and ZF...75000mi on the odo...yeah! Right!) for $700 plus about fifty bucks in diesel plus $243 and change for the tow. I think I may still be ahead, if the engine starts.
PTO is off the ZF. The truck was (ironically!) a roll back with the frame stretched about 2'. Shoulda seen it on my 5 ton! I'll post a pic tomorrow.
The tranny looks like brand new through the PTO hole. Shifts like a brand new one too...with the motor not running.
It has a new clutch and slave in it and a shiny rebuilt starter so someone thought it was worth messing with.
My Kubota is stranded and I have another job coming up. I'll have to get on it (fixing my truck) but this is the last thing I needed right now. I have an IRS audit next week also. KILL ME!
Noticed that the engine is an A185.
Googled it and found that the 1988 Super Duty didn't come with this engine...or a ZF tranny.
Is this correct?

The ZF was available in '87, but I don't know what the SD had for options.
A quick search tells me an A185 is a 7.3L. 1988 was the first year for the 7.3, so you have the right engine.
I'm going to try to get the engine running in the red one one more time today.
I need to start stripping it tomorrow.

Brand new clutch but it looks like china crap.

Guess I'll be shifting Road Ranger style.

Edit: Never did hear the engine run. I took off the solenoid and saw rusty fuel in the pump. The governor rod seemed to be stuck at first poke with my finger. Cant say for sure. In any case, no fuel being pumped to the injectors and I don't have time to fool with it. I'll have to start it on the ground when I do have time.
Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
the master cylinder in the red truck isn't going to work. The rod has broken and been welded and the clips in the master cylinder piston are broken.
The firewall plates are different. I was planning on using the one from the '88 in my '94 but, since I'll need a new master, that won't work....I don't think.
How does the '90-'96 clutch master look on the firewall? I can't find any pictures.
Will I need to source a different plate to mount the master? Is there even a plate?
Should I just make one?
Edit: I won a PTO plate off eBay. Hopefully it comes soon. I'm dead in the water without my truck.

IRS agent is coming to see me tomorrow.
