My 2002 Ex 4x4 developed a shudder during breaking. Today while trying to jack it up and put on jack stands. My 2 3/4 ton jack was too weak/short to lift it up to put on stands. I am using 6 ton stands just to lift the front.
So have to get new jack. Keep in mind I don't have a ton of cash for new jack. What size are you all using to get your ex up on stands? Thanks

I use a craftsman 3 ton floor jack, it lifts my 6.0 fine

 

Me too, sometimes I put a tree cut-off (round) under it or a 4x4" block. I see them and heavier ones all the time at garage sales for $5 with handles and working fine. I also run it up on those portable ramps sometimes (another 5-$10 item) but they need to be heavy enough. I have flattened 2 sets of them so far at a total loss of $10. The ones I have now are wider in the mid section than the others ($10). If the truck can make it up to the top they will stay in proper form.

 

Yea if i need to lift high i just crib 4x4s under it. I also need to start doing that because our driveway is old and my truck actually pushed the wheels of the jack into the driveway...

 

I thought everyone owned that large 6ton blue floor jack from sears...

 

I second the bottle jack. I have a 20 ton.

The bottle jacks make me nervous. I like the creeper style, wider base, wider jacking plate etc. I don't sweat jacking up both tires at the same time with the creeper style, would never attempt w/ bottle jack. Just IMHO. They do have there place, smaller and definitely sturdy enough.

 

3 ton floor jack here. I like how they have the 4" or so square perch to ensure a good lift point

bottle jacks scare the bejesus out of me. I had one slip off the axle on my Bronco. they are dangerous and I only use them as a last resort

 

Bottle jacks are good to save space in your garage and safe if you place them correctly and only lift one wheel at a time. As with any jack they need to be used with a stand(s) if you are going to crawl under there. I had one slip many years ago when a friend was under the car checking out a muffler. It put a little squeeze on him and gave him a lifetime memory. We quickly re-positioned the jack and pulled him out by his legs.

They go on sale constantly, check in any automotive magazine for the HF coupons, and they go for 79.99 and are a hell of a deal compared to used stuff on the market. have a set of four 6-ton older jack stands that work great to support the frame when the truck is jacked up by the axles.

I guess I'm a bit crazy about this.

(2) 3-1/2 ton floor jacks, one Michelin, and the other a Sears. (4) 20 ton bottle jacks, and I almost forgot: a long chassis floor jack I got used a few years ago from a gas station going out of business. It lifts about 28 inches. Heavy as sin.

4 each of 3 ton, 6 ton, and 12 ton jack stands, and a bunch of 6X6 for cribbing when I lift all four wheels. I use the cribbing for safety, not to hold the load.

And don't forget the chocks. 4 large plastic, 4 large rubber, and 4 small rubber.

I'm paranoid about it for a reason. Having a car fall on you is not pleasant and if you don't die outright then it hurts scary as hell while your ribs break slowly and you can't breath anymore.. (You don't want to know how stupid I was when I was young)

I got a bunch of logs, too. I should keep them in mind for it.

Someday I should invest in a asymmetric lift. That would be a lot better.
