Ok guys here's what's up. My steering wheel now "vibrates" as I go around a curve at a slow speed and I get a loud groan from the truck when I'm turning the wheels (again at a speed of less than 40 mph). The fluid is full and the belt is tight. Ball joints and all front end parts are tight. New front tires professionally mounted and balanced. This problem just started 3 days ago.
Any suggestions? The leaks from the box and pump have slowed down considerably. I have full range of motion with the wheels but when I hit the end of the travel I hear a loud "clank!" from under the truck (this i presume is normal even though I've never heard this before?). I'm stumped.
Yes I did. I had my dad try it as well (30+ year ASE tech). He said he didn't see anything out of the ordinary and I didn't see anything wrong either. Everything was tight.
my thoughts would be that the gearbox isn't getting enough fluid from the pump, since the noise and vibration cuts out at higher rpms when the pump is spinning faster. Could there just be some blockage in the lines?
The groan doesn't sound like the power steering pump, right? Sometimes it takes a while to work the air out of the system especially if it has just been replaced. It will whip the fluid into almost a foam and cause the growl and hard to steer.
Just a guess, it sounds like your would know better than me.
As for the "clank", I think I would look at the front axle u-joint. If the stops aren't set right they can bind then pop.
