The honeymoon's over

I picked up a new 05' Toreador Red Eddie Bauer 6.0 Excursion about 2 weeks ago. Barely a scratch on it, and the interior is flawless. I'm missing one crossbar on the luggage rack and one of the black plastic doo-dads on the LS dutch door that holds the door open. The only mods I can find is a Sinister Diesel EGR delete and chunk of door screen behind the grille to protect the radiator.

Been getting 15mpg around town, not too bad until we left for Northern WI (from SW MI) on Fri. I pulled off the highway in downtown Chicago and had to stop for a traffic light. When I tried to go again, there was no response from the go pedal. Engine idled fine, but wouldn't respond. I shut the engine down and restarted and it worked fine after that until we got to our Cabin. For the remainder of the weekend we had intermittent problems with the pedal initially, and then it also started stalling. Always, we would turn the engine off and restart and it would go again. It eventually got pretty consistent Mon morning driving home. Everytime we hit the off ramp or slow for traffic, the pedal would quit working, and then the engine would stall. Until the last 200 miles after dusk, then no problems. Driving around town today no problems. Hwy mpg's hand calculated at 16.0 mpg at 70mph, 5 passengers and cargo. I'd expected a bit better.

Temps are a bit cooler now than they were over the weekend, not sure if that has anything to do with anything or not. I haven't checked for codes yet. The CEL is always on because of the EGR delete.

The cross-bar on the roof should be removed - it tends to rub though the paint. It's the first and cheapest (FREE) mod for a new Ex owner.

Welcome aboard - sorry can't help you with the pedal, BUT the stalling suggests it's NOT the pedal.. DID you buy the SG2 yet (or equiv) without being able to read PCM parameters it's going to be nearly impossible to help you out.

Do you know if you have an '04 or an '05 engine? Most '05 Ex's have an '04 engine due to Ford running out the supply on a body that was about to discontinue. But some of the last ones built do have '05 engines and they have some differences.

Your issue sounds like an IPR valve issue starting... Could be a variety of things, but first things I would would do is get a good tune put on the truck that stops talking to the EGR, then something to read codes and monitor. That will help your trouble-shooting a whole lot. The CEL is going to cause issues eventually by the ECM looking for an EGR valve that isn't there. If you call Gearhead or Innovative they can write you a nice tune for an EGR-deleted truck that will make it run better, I picked up close to 3 mpg on the highway, and you'll love the added power.

If you rule out IPR and can monitor / read codes...you can start digging down into FICM and other things. Could be air in the fuel system too somewhere... Most 6.0 issues are trivial with the fixes tried and true, but this one along with hot-start issue can be a bear to figure out.

Could be your ICP, but you need to read them codes first! Sounds electrical to me.

Your fuel mileage city is better than mine, but I'm getting around 22 hwy flat florida hwy at 70-75

Yes, i have sg2. I haven't noticed anything too interesting yet, but I'm new to the diesel. I programmed the app codes from another thread but only get 1 of the 5 to work.

Is it normal for the pedal to quit responding all together when problems arise, like a safe mode or something? I'm wondering if i have 2 things going on.

It's possible that the SGII isn't reading all the codes. It's not a good code reader on the 03 and 04 model motors.

The 04 engine is not supposed to throw a code with the EGR deleted. Mine doesn't.

The light is on. Sg always says 2 codes, but usually doesn't let me read them.

One time it gave me an EGR code.

what about accelerator pedal position sensor. I believe it is a 3 position potentiometer that will work if 1 input is down but will not if 2 or more are on the way out.

Been running a little rough this week, I haven't been on the highway, but stayed running and the gas pedal worked ok.

Until this morning that is. I didn't think I was going to get to work. Idle was erratic for the first 3 miles. Then I let it idle while I dropped the kids off. Next 2 miles ran rough with some surging and the gas pedal quit working everytime I came to a stop. Had to turn off, restart. I came to a stop light, that I couldn't get through. Gas pedal quit working when I stopped for it. Turn off, restart, put it back in gear 3 times before I got going again. It run erratic for the next couple of minutes, and then drove ok after that.

This morning after 10 hrs, before starting I took the following KOEO readings from my scangauge II. After getting to work I took LI and HI readings (which I assumed meant Low Idle and High Idle). I used 1250rpm for HI. I've been watching running readings this week, they seem within range - didn't get to pay attention too much this morning.

Name KOEO LI HI
FLP 11.5 13.5 13.5
FVP 11.5 14.0 14.0

EBP 14.3 18.3 19.6
BOO 0 0.8 2.1
