Another P0299 Thread!

Hey guys,

I had my CE light come on while going up a hill the other day, checked SGII and had a P0299 code. I reset the code and it pops right back up instantly. I've been doing some reading here but time limited. I went out and took some readings from my SGII...

KO (hot engine)

BMP 14.3
MAP 14.3
EBP 14.7

LI

BMP 14.3
MAP 14.7
EBP 17.1

HI

BMP 14.3
MAP 18.2
EBP 22.5

The EBP was around 44.8 WOT on the flats.

VGT was around 82 at idle in gear and 34 or so WOT let of pedal and down to 17 or so then stabilized at 40-50 at 55 MPH or so. Boost gets into the mid 20's pretty quick and seems normal.

I did have a problem awhile back with a no start that I think is related to the battery. After a SG test on the cells looks like one might be in the process of failing. Anyway, charged batteries good re-installed them and it popped over. been pretty good since but a bit of cranking on start and at times I begin to worry about a no start. Right now it is cranking a bit longer than it should but starts. Just thought I'd add that as it is a recent issue. I have not yet checked the EBV.

What do you think?

Thanks,
Steve

I haven't gone through it extensively but look okay. Building boost good too, seems to rise and fall as it should. The code comes back at idle right after being cleared.

Thanks,
Steve

I don't know that I hear the turbo sweep at idle, IIRC that requires an updated flash? Turbo seems to function good by watching the PSI rise and fall.

Just took my daughter to gymnastics, on the way home I opened it up going up a pretty good hill. I let up towards the top of the hill then put my foot back on it some, VGT stuck at 85 for a bit and obviously no power. Finally closed back down. It would seem the turbo is a bit sticky after all. That wouldn't explain the code coming back right after clearing though.

Thanks, good to know. I'll reset and see what happens. I'm going to have to have the work done, don't have the time and have bad back that prevents it. I did get a referral to a dealer that has a mechanic that owns a 6.0 and is supposed to be quite good. Anyway, I'm thinking about replacing the Turbo with a Garrett Powermax. While I'll be paying the labor, figured I might as well have it replaced. Was thinking about an upgrade anyway. If the Turbo is bad by chance, I'll be stuck buying OEM at a dealer price or waiting to order a turbo. I am leaving town on business so have to get this resolved by the end of next week. If the turbo is good and just needs cleaned, I can always sell it and recuperate some of my investment.

Either way, if I have the turbo off, anything that I should have replaced while the turbo is out of the way?

Thanks!

Just curious, does anyone know how many hours Ford specs to R&R a turbo? Trying to decide whether to order a turbo tomorrow or not. If so will probably order new IC boots. Anything else while I'm at it?
Thanks!

What's steering you to thinking of changing the turbo, are you going to mod the truck? You'd be surprised how great the stock one feels after a cleaning....

I haven't looked at all your posts so: how many miles on it?

The truck/turbo has over 170K. You can see my sig for mods. Wouldn't mind having a little better turbo. Figured I'll be paying the labor and with the miles on it and not knowing the condition, I may be better off buying new. I like to have things done. haven't decided yet but leaning toward replacing.

Just looked up the turbo and it does sound nice. Here's the squeeze: you can get it for 10% off on XDP's Labor Day sale (I checked and it's included), but you have to order it before midnight... Use coupon code LABOR10 and shipping is free (plus they gaurantee low price, so you can haggle that tomorrow if you find a better deal). I've bought a bunch of stuff from them -- nice folk and always the best price for what I've been shopping for. Go for it and I want to know how it works (btw: I was thinking like upgraded injectors, etc., I had read your sig)

That's a pretty good deal, best I'd found was $1179 w/ free shipping. This would be $1124. I'm over thinking, should probably bite the bullet and just order. May not be needed but as I said, I hate to pay all the labor and still possibly have to do it again down the road. I've got in in the basket, just need to do it... I will likely keep the Excursion until my kids are grown, they are 12 & 9 now. It's great for traveling and towing a big TT.

I have to admit, awhile back I had a seemingly metal squealing noise. Local shop said turbo right away and I was kind of excited to upgrade. I took it home and within a few minutes, realized it was an exhaust leak. Thought it was the broken gasket at the muffler but it was a bad connection at the down pipe. I wanted the turbo then but would have been pissed if I bought it for an exhaust leak. I guess the turbo was having issues then, I remember the same no power/boost at the top of the hill about then. No code thrown and I didn't have the SGII set up to monitor the VGT then.

I figured you meant bigger mods like injectors, not going there unless they need to be replaced. I have the SCT tuner that will play nice with this turbo. Have yet to get custom tunes installed, having issues loading them. Will need new tunes written anyway with upgraded turbo in mind.

Well, I did it... something tells me I'll end up with other parts when at the dealer, it always happens like that. I need to call SCT and see if I can get my tuner/tunes straightened out too!
