Article says the trailer started to sway causing the whole rig to flip. Sad.
A couple weeks ago on our way home from a camping trip we saw a Surburban and travel trailer rolled over in the median. They got cut off, but thankfully, the whole family survived. Be safe out there...
Yeah I had a good friend flip his expedition pulling a 33 foot tt and ripped up part of his head badly. they had to life flight him out. Luckily the kids where all ok and he made a full recovory, but scary. He didnt have all the add on you should for towing. Thats why i have changed leafs on my excursion added RAS and sway bars and im just getting to the point where i almost like towing with my excursion. SUV SUCK at towing. My dodge with the same wheel base was better and my f250 sd extended cab long bed was miles better even lifted 6 inches on 37's!
It's sad that the accident happened yes, and I don't wish that on anyone.
But Hate to say it, but some people don't have the know how on what to do when a trailer does start to sway. And there are people that have no right towing any trailer at all.
Most TT have axles located far forward in order to decrease tongue weight (which perpetuates sway). If tongue weight is above 350~ you see the front wheels almost off the pavement (lessening steering sensation and control as well as braking) most every TT needs either sway control, weight distribution hitch, RAS or some modification. The only time I see safe towing without some sort of (fulcrum manipulation) is a boat trailer.
The trailer needs to be level with the hitch in order for brake, steering, and suspension systems to operate correctly.
When towing the driver needs to be constantly looking at potential situations and anticipating every possible scenario.
I do not remember where I learned this but..."Between your foot and whatever pedal you are pushing is an egg don't break the egg."
