I have a 79 F350 4x4 with a 460, a nv4500, Dana 60 front axle np205 and an 83 Dana 70 with drum brakes. I always seem to have a problem with the rear brakes not adjusting up or with broken return springs. Yes I have used new hardware kits when I replace the rear shoes. The question I have is what year did Ford use rear disc brakes on a Dana 70 axle. My truck does not have dual rear wheels. One more thing, my park brake cables work and are hooked up. will I be able to use my 79 park brake cables or will I have to go with the disc brake cables. I want to use Ford parts if possible . I got a junk yard axle with disc I want to say 98-99 is where they started with disc rear. The one I found was from a 99. There is generally a spot where the single cable from the cab splits off to each rear wheel. I used the cables from the disc setup and just fabbed up a coupler to connect them to the single cable. You might want to also consider stealing the brake combination valve ( portioning and metering) from your donor vehicle. Your 79 drums use a metering valve that disc brakes do not need and might cause a dragging in the rear if not addressed.

PS. Had the same BS adjustment issue on EVERY ford drum setup I've ever owned or had the pleasure to work on. What a design huh?!

 

Get a disc brake set from an Econoline as they still used the Dana 60 rear, not the Sterling 10.25/10.5 Super Duty.
