Auxiliary springs

Hey everyone,

my 1992 F-250 7.3 4X4 single cab came with what looks to be an auxiliary leaf spring set with three leafs. I purchased the truck from a dealer and they told me that the guy who owned it hauled a cab over camper and towed a boat with it, so he installed these springs. I think it's great that to have the extra hauling capacity, however I won't ever need them, unless I purchase that cab over camper that I've been wanting (this will be a while).

I hit small changes in pavement on the freeway and I'll leave the seat for a second and catch a couple inches of air . Now, if I wanted a Cadillac ride, I would have bought a Cadillac, however the truck often feels as if there isn't any suspension at all. I took a closer look at those springs and the truck is definitely riding on them as well as the factory springs. As I say, I'm not in any way expecting this truck to ride anything like my dad's '03 Lariat, however I don't know how many more times my kidneys can sucker punch my stomach until I'll need to see a doctor.

These springs are held on with two u-bolts at each end and one mount that attaches to the factory bracket just above the axle. Can I just remove the end u-bolts to relieve the tension and then the center mount and pull them out?

Thanks,

Dan

My 0.02 USD worth . . .

Sounds like aftermarket, maybe Hellwig. You should be able to remove them with no problems.

Thanks for the help. They came off with no unexpected issues and the truck rides much better. Now I only bounce off the seat one inch lol.

Thanks,
Dan

Hmm . . .

Don't feel alone in gaining seat altitude.

My truck, the one in the sig line, actually skitters around on this one section of pavement near Concord, CA. It's so dangerous I'll take a lengthy detour around that area, at least until Caltrans fixes the roadway. Definitely a seat puckering moment.

Sounds like a Helwig setup.. I have them on my F150 and they work well. They are adjustable in that you can vary the amount of preload from nothing on up by cranking the U-bolts on the ends tighter, and when setup properly they should not really affect unloaded ride quality. In any event if you're not going to use them they should fetch $100 or so on the used market.

Sorry for the lack of reply on my part. Way too much going on over here.

California is filled with poorly maintained roadways. I live in Windsor, just north of Santa Rosa. Been putting up with our roads all my life.

Good to know that they work well. I'll hang onto them for the future, I just don't need them right now. I'd like to have a camper at some point, so they will be nice at that point in time.
