I've read information about the TSB. Apparently there is a problem with the Torque converter clutch. Sometimes it slips while attempting to go into overdrive due to the friction material. There is supposed to be an additive you can add to the tranny fluid that prevents the slipping. I came across it during a search I was doing for my problem with my tranny not "locking up" after I installed my shift kit.
Which is another suggestion. I know you are under warranty still, so I wouldn't suggest this doing this until after you are out, but if you install the Trans-Go shift kit from www.txchange.com, part # SK44-55E, you will see this problem go away. The kit makes some mechanical changes to the lower valve body of the tranny, which increases hydraulic pressure internally. This allows for firmer shifting, which causes cooler operating temperature, and it actually increases the life expectancy of the tranny! The kit is only $27, and can be installed by yourself very carefully in about 3-5 hours, or take it to a pro.
Originally posted by cowboy133 Also there are tsb's i found on this but cant read the whole tsb. Does anyone have the complete tsb for 02-22-2,02-13-8,and 02-8-3. That might be the ticket to make them fix it. and thanks again guys for your help
I got them but can't attach to FTE email, send me an email and then I can reply with the attachments.
I don't think this is normal. It shudders hard enough going into 4 and 5th that it makes the cd player skip. Its going in next week to a different dealer to see what they can do.
My 01 sport trac has been slipping even giving slip codes at around 70k. The trans has been serviced every 15k. I finally had the bands adjusted(adjusters on side) and the slipping stops for about 10k then starts again. How long till the adjustments dont fix anymore? I went through the whole is it the right fluid/torn gasket/shift solonoids/bullet valve thing with the dealers and never once did anyone suggest adjusting the bands. I ordered a manuall for 5r553 trans from phoenix transmission and it also mentions this need of adjustment. I only respond to this because for me, the adjustment is the only thing to change the slip problem. I just hope mine is not too far gone and I am on borrowed time.
Seems to me I remember a thread on FTE last year, can't remember when or where, about the factory using the wrong tranny fluid & there was a TSB for the Dealer to add a friction modifier to the fluid, to fix things up. Anyone remember that, maybe it's happened again!!!!
The wrong fluid thing happened on '02 or '03 trannys, I think... anyhow, if it's slipping, it's just a matter of time before it's toast. A rebuild with the latest, updated parts and procedures is probably in order.
