So, its been a long time since i have been on here and a long time since i have done work on my ride. I was trying to remember what I had to do to upgrade my electrical system to support modern electrical equipment like power windows/door locks, a new stereo and electronic ignition. For some reason a few years back I collected a BG one wire alternator and remember wanting to upgrade my voltage regulator? It's all so foggy these days. Does this sound right or should I just put an all new painless system in? I would rather not spend the money on a painless system to be honest... I just cant remember what I could and couldnt run off the stock 68 F100 system. I know my stereo now takes quite a drain!
I have a later model high amp from a 90's Ford Taurus, and what I did was run a separate box full of relays, and then the power that feeds them goes through a circuit breaker, and then original wiring is used to turn the relays on and off, so I get full power to headlights, to ignition, electric fan, etc, but without having to alter any of the original wiring under the dash. I also ran a wire through a circuit breaker and routed it to the inside of the cab and used that power source for modern radio, and anything else I need inside the cab (second cigarette lighter outlet for phone charger or GPS, etc). So far its worked out well, it takes a lot of the amps away from the original wires because all they are doing now is turning the relays on and off.
I figured I would have to do the alternator. I thought there was a voltage regulator upgrade you could do also? Like one from a newer f150.... I don't know I might be thinking of something else.
I really like the relay box idea but I have no idea whats involved in that is it difficult to get the required parts? I don't know a lot about wiring that's why I ask.
I added an expansion fuse block to a '72 Maverick for extra circuits. Don't recall where I bought it but the expansion block had 4 switched (ignition on) circuits and 3 always-on circuits. A relay fed the switched circuits.
Relays were added for headlights, elect fan, and dual horns (all unswitched). The old coil wire energized the relay for switched circuits for ignition, elect choke and probably one or two other things.
I also completely rewired a '70 F100 with an E Z Wiring kit. I'll NEVER do that again!!! It'll be much easier to clean up any wiring messes the previous owners left you and add an expansion block for new circuits.
The 3G alternators have internal voltage regulators.

Something like this although I don't think 40 bucks is a good deal for it.

Like HIO Silver posted the 3g alternator has the built in regulator system..and it's an ez install....orich
