Ray, do your spring leaves have the grooves for that purpose? I think those grooves are one reason BonusBuilt trucks crack so many leaves, dirt gets channeled right down into the center of the pack, sits there wet, you know the rest...
The springs appear to be the common flat variety with one leaf wearing and rusting against the other.
Interesting thread, indeed. Looking at the original owner's manual for Missy Green, my 1956 F350, I find the lubrication chart for all models. Under spring lubrication, it says to "Spray with dripless penetrating oil" This is on page 35 and recommended at 1000 mile interval and for all trucks.
Well, my Shop Manual under lubrication on page 332 lists for the springs "Spray the springs with dripless penetrating oil (fig. 38)" and shows in fig. 38 arrows pointing to the spring pins and shackle pins (not the springs themselves).
But on the previous page, it lists the spring pins and shackle pins with a reference to fig 32, which is a picture of the tie rod end. And fig 33 is supposed to be the Steering drag link, but it's the Spring pins and Shackle pins close up.

So, who knows?
Since the spring end pins and bushings have the zerk fittings, it just about mandates chassis grease of some variety be used there. I've not checked the '56 shop manual, maybe tomorrow, since it is in the truck and I am not going out to the barn tonight. Been a long day
