7.3 IDI vs. 7.3 PSD
I have a young friend several states away that just told me he bought a 7.3 diesel. Turns out, it's a 1990. How much of my knowledge will be applicable to help him? I know that the OBS 7.3 has some of the same features/sensors, but how about IDI? Do they have a HPOP, IPR, ICP, CPS, etc? In the pic he sent me, his air filter is sitting where my turbo would be. At first I thought he had been snookered and bought a gasser, lol. I'm assuming they're pretty much 2 tirally different creatures...

Knowledge of diesel function(Compression ignition) is the same, but they do not use HPOP, IPR, ICP, etc. It uses a high pressure fuel pump, a 1990 shouldn't be turbo charged unless it was added aftermarket, some of the late IDI's were dealer installed banks turbos though.

Like Alan said, totally different animal. The only similarity is the displacement. Those engines are stoneage-simple and the only electronics it needs are the fuel shut-off solenoid. This is actually how most other diesels work, using an engine-driven injection pump (IP) to pressurize the fuel for injection. Our HEUI system is unique in the compression-ignition world and now with Common Rail injection systems being standard, it has become antiquated!!
The good news is that is a solid platform and while it lacks the HP of our more modern trucks - that old IDI will pull hard all day and can run for a long time. They are also much cheaper to fix than our PSD's.
