Risky Purchase?????

I'm currently looking at buying a 93 F350 with a 7.3 Banks Turbo; what is the difference in this engine/turbo combo and the 94-97 Powstroke engines? I'm new to the diesel engine and very ignorant of the specs.

Thanks!

Risky Purchase?????

I found a 95 F350 with a 7.3 Banks Turbo engine with only 42,000 on the truck. I hear horror stories about piston cylinder cavitation and was wondering if a 10 year old diesel with such low miles may be a risky purchase with the thought that the antifreeze may not have been changed or checked. Any thoughts???

A '95 should be a Power Stroke, unless someone has swapped engines in it.

42k miles, that's a great find. Cavitation won't be a problem with that few of miles. Do a search in this forum and the Pre Power Stroke forum on cavitation. That should put your mind at ease.

You have me confused, in another thread, you stated it was a '95.

If it is a '93, it's a mechanical engine, while a Power Stroke is a computer controlled engine. The down side to the older ones is a little less power, a little less milage and more emisions. The upside to them are they are easier to work one, and parts are a lot cheaper.

What do you mean by MECHANICAL engine? Again, I'm very ignorant of the diesels but have decided that this is the route I want to go.

Thanks for correcting me...

Since it's a pre PSD (Power Stroke) you'd be better served in the Pre Power Stroke forum.
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/f...s=&forumid=117

Mechanical means it's not computer controlled, as in old style. It's hard to describe without writing an essay on it

Browse that other forum and you'll have a good understanding of the engine.

Pre-computer controlled...good enough. That clears one question up for me. I will post the question on the other forum.

Thanks for your help; I'm slowly learning!
