It will not be easy. I quit close to 15 yrs ago. Cold Turkey. My wife and kids were what I used to not smoke agian. Not to mention being here longer to see then grow up. My father-in-law died from lung cancer. My mother-in-law also died from cancer caused from second hand smoke. You can do it.
After smoking Camels for over 20 years I used Zyban. It worked great for me. There was no urge to smoke at all. I've been clean for about a month. I still have an urge now and then, but their not that bad anymore. Take a look at these www.whyquit.com & www.quitmeter.com The longer your off the butts the easier it gets to say no. GOOD LUCK !!!!
Hi,
What did it for me was reading my own words. While responding to an earlier post by Brienobrien, I re-read what I had typed.
Somehow seeing my own words justifying why I couldn't stop really impacted me.
I decided to try going cold turkey this time. Last time I tried to quit I used those prescription inhalers. They got me off of the cigarettes, but I became addicted to those instead.
I stoped smoking cigs. 15 years ago.I desided the only way was to NEVER light one up.The only problem is they still smell good.I went to cigars for awile but they do stink. Good Luck
Well it will be one whole day, I was tinkering on the truck and was wondering
if someone might have started a thread on the subject. Low and behold I did
a search and here I am. I don't see any resent post, how's all the new quitters doing? I've tried before, went a whole year. I forget who it was that said "Quitting smoking was the easiest thing I ever did, I've done it hundreds of times".
As others said, just put them down. I quit 11 years ago, cold turkey, after smoking 2-3 packs a day for 21 years. The first week was kinda rough, but it got a lot better after that. One thing to think about is what you will do with all that money you save. Maybe some more add ons for your truck?
I'm giving myself an early reward AND incentive to quit by getting the new truck. I don't want that new perty thing to be all stinky, so I figure it'll be just one more reason to stay off the dang things. I only have a few days left to be a smoker and I'm hoping it wont be as hard to quit as it has in the past.
Good luck to all trying to quit & let us know how you're doing along the way! Support is a GREAT help in achieving this goal.
What made me quit was the sin taxes in MD. In May of 93 the state put more per pack taxes on, so the price went from $10 to $14 a carton. They keep going up. Ther are now $20 to $25 a carton, I think, as I reallly don't look any more. This state gets more than enogh of my money as it is.
I made the mistake of giving up one form of tobacco for another. Gave up smoking and started dipping. First Skoal, and then Kodiak. It was actually tougher to give up dipping. Now I have damaged lungs AND some bad teeth. I think they should tax all forms of tobacco 10 times more then they are now. That would make it much easier for people to quit.
I never picked up the habit. Howerver, It seems that everyone I know smiokes. It doesn't phase me because I have been around smokers all my life. That does not mean that I like it!
If I could get my wife to quit, that would make my life complete.
I quit using wellbutrin and the patch. It was about the hundredth time I quit, but with the help of the medicines and my family it stuck. From 2 1/2 or 3 packs a day to zero. It's been 10 months and I have no interest in starting ever again.
Yes, you must be serious about quitting. Here are just a few more tips:
-Buy a new toothbrush. May sound funny, actually the old one will keep the nicotine going in your system, keeping the craving alive.
-Take plenty of vitamin C. This will help flush the nicotine from your body.
It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done (quit). About 20 years free, and for the first few years, I always reached for them in my front top shirt pocket. I must say even today when one lights up with a zippo lighter……….It can be tempting.
