Hi there folks, first post here, I live up in northern alberta Canada. I just recently purchased a 95 F350 with the 7.3, 5 speed manual tranny, 179000 km's. Has some issues, when a rev it up in neutral it smokes and sputters approx 2000- 2500 rpm...low end power seems ok, starts ok too as long as I glow plug. It when cold.
I've read A LOT of uesfull info on here already, but I figured I would ask the experts before starting to trouble shoot.
BTW fuel filter is changed.
Thanks
its most noticble when in neutral, but it seems to lack top end power when driving.
will post pics when i get the chance, its a red dually flat deck with strait pipes. really like the truck already even though its not workin right yet.
Well the reason I ask if there is a chip is because there is a power limiter that prevents the engine from going above a certain RPM that is built right in to the PCM.
I have never had to change one but this is one of the first things to try when the engine starts having issues.
The PSD is pretty simple as far as common rail diesels go. Not a lot will stop them but the CPS is one of those things. It is apparently very easy to change... As I said i have never had to though.

EDT: I figure check the fuel pressure first cause it's a cheap and easy check.

That's what I was thinking. IIRC, there's a crude neutral test to tell. In neutral with the engine warm, rev it slowly to 3k. See if it stumbles around 2700-2800. I think my numbers are right. Lol
I think it's usually around 1800-2200 rpms, but I'm sure that can vary. Pull the cap off the fuel bowl and see if the fuel in the bowl and the filter itself is real black looking.
CPS is the CAM position sensor (there is no crank position sensor). As said, required glove box content.
Chip check - remove the fasteners for the parking brake handle assembly (leave the cable attached) and move the assembly toward the right side of the truck, away from the cab wall. You'll see the PCM sticking into the firewall from there. The chip will be plugged into a socket in an opening in the aft end of the PCM, if one is there.

I was thinking 2200-2500 generally speaking iirc. how black was that old fuel filter anyway?
