A few days ago, I posted that my 96 F-350 with a 7.3l Powerstroke won't start occasionally. Right now is one of those times. I took the suggestions from a few of you, and now I'm lost. So, I'm back..
The truck won't start. It has a brand new (2 days ago) Ford CPS. I fired up my trusty scan tool and found (while cranking):
VPWR is 10.56 v
RPM is 137-143
ICP is 205
and FUELPW is 0.053
When I found the ICP below 500, I checked out the IPRDC, which is 54.9
Checking the flowchart of what to do next, it says to connect test plugs tool # D94T 6600 A. However, I do not have this tool, while I can order it, I'm not interested in spending $250 for a diagnostic tool. Does someone have an idea of how to check for a bad HPOP/ IPR? Or where to go from here?
Engine oil full. HPOP oil full and changed last week. Fuel filter bowl is full. I'm now able to get it started for short periods (30 seconds to 3 min ea), then it dies and immediately restarts
If vehicle power is below 11v I have a hard time believing that its cranking over fast enough. Between slow crank speed and not turning hpop fast enough, you aren't getting anywhere. Pull batteries and get them tested. Put a good booster/charger on batteries or if you have awesome booster cables, a good vehicle to help boost voltage while cranking.
Your starter could be weak and drawing a lot of current also causing low batt voltage. Cranking rpm should be in the 300s I would expect. Not mid 100s.
Batteries are about 1 year old 850 cca from Ford. Spec says it needs at least 7 volts for the PCM during cranking and the batteries are showing 12.01 v after an overnight sitting and no load. The HPOP needs a minimum of 100 rpm to trigger the IPR and ICP. However, the ICP is supposed to be over 500 psi to start the engine (not the 205 I was getting).
This has been an intermittent issue that happens once every 3-5 days. After about an hour from first no start, the truck just starts. The VPWR is still mid-10's during cranking. The RPMs are still about 150, but suddenly the ICP is showing about 800 psi and it just starts like nothing was ever wrong.
But every since the truck wouldn't start on Sunday, it starts normally, and then just runs a little rough until it fully warms up (10-15 minutes later), then runs perfectly fine.
