360 Manifold Trouble

Well, today I started the process of removing the old exhaust to get ready for new.
I took off what was left of the old pipes no problem..... Until I got to the passenger side, bottom bolt, that holds the pipe to the manifold (excuse me if I sound like I have no idea what Im talking about, I dont)
Well anyway, All the bolts were pretty rusty, but that one was the only one that snapped on me.
What should I do about the snapped bolt?
My first thought was to take the Manifold off, and have it tapped with new bolts/studs put in.
I dont know how much of a pain getting the manifold off is going to be though. I couldnt even get a socket on the bolts. I dont even know what size they are! a 9/16 is way too big and wont catch anything, and a 1/2 wont fit on. Ford wasnt on crack and made it 17/32 did they?
Im guessing its just really rusted and shot.
Anyway, any help on this is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Angry 360 Manifold Trouble

Funny thats the same one that I had problems with.

If you are keeping the manifolds I'd try to fix it wothout removing it, becasue if you pull the manifold you will have 8 more chances to break a bolt.

Is there any thing left of the stud in the manifold or did it break clean at the manifold surface?

I would advise copious amounts of "PB Blaster" in any case.

if u are any good with a welder, u can weld a washer on whats left of the broken off bolt in the manifold and then weld a nut on the washer and screw it out

Whats left of the bolt is too rusty to get out, I tried and tried, its broken off about 1/4 inch inside of the manifold now. I think my only option is to drill and tap it out.

Were you going to do all the exhaust work yourself or have a muffler shop complete it?

Reason I ask is these studs do break off and the muff guys are really good at blowing out what's left of it with a torch.

I haven't tackled one of these in a long time but you used to be able to buy a special clamp just for this. It would go over the manifold flange, around the side of the connection and tighten up against the pipe flange. I don't know if these can even be had anymore but they worked good back in the day.

> buy a special clamp just for this.

Autozone sells these.

Many muffler shops have special MIG machines where they can MIG weld a new stud on top of what is left of the old one. It is an easy shot on the right hand side for that.

They are special nuts ( a "thin" wall nut, standard sized outside though) and you have to use a very thin wall socket to get them off since normal sized and impact sockets will not fit inside the flange.

Had that happen when I installed headers on original motor in my truck. Was able to drill it out with a reverse twist drill bit, half way into bolt it backed its way out with no damage to threads. Also used lots of Nuts Off!, and ran a tap into it to make sure.
