Cheap 460 performance Ideas?

Hey Guys,

So Ive got a 460 EFI that I need to rebuild. After doing new rings and bearings and seals i plan to do some mild and cheap performance and was just wondering what some of your ideas were. Right now I have a different air intake, Smog controls deleted, a heavy duty clutch and a straight exhaust. But other than that nothing. My plans Right now include:

90's Mustang ECM.
Mild Cam
MAF conversion.
Advance timing a few degrees.

Does anyone know if the rumor about putting the 90 Mustang ECM on the 460 wakes it up?
What about cam recommendations?
As for the MAF conversion, i am going to do it myself. so what parts do i need? i am not buying a ridiculously expensive kit. just gather the parts and rig it together.

Thanks,
Montana Redneck

What year is you truck?

The first thing on your list should be opening up the intake and exhaust systems, Ford installed some rediculous air horns in the intake tubes on these motors so get those cut out, and the whole exhaust system especially the manifolds need to go away and be replaced with headers and 2.5" tubing.

As for converting the truck to MAF the Mustang ECU can be used but only if the truck has a C6 or manual trans, if it has the E4OD that's a complete no go. Using a Mustang ECU will require a tuner though since that box is programmed for a 5.0 and 19lb injectors, the tuner of choice these days is the Moates Quarterhorse with Binary Editor software on a laptop, total cost for this is about $400 excluding the laptop but it gives you complete access to all parameters in the EFI system so you can run any combination of injectors and MAF meter on any motor.

The EEC thing isn't a rumor, But it isn't as simple as putting it in. You MUST to have a tuner for the EEC to tweak it to run the 460, otherwise it will run WAY worse with the EEC. You will also need a stand alone trans computer if you have the E4OD.

As for the MAF, your gonna be tested when it comes to finding parts. There were very FEW 460 trucks made with a MAF setup. You need the ENTIRE air box and hoses, the MAF sensor and then you will need a MAF EEC, preferably one with a J3 port for tuning. On top of that, you need to either harvest the injector and MAF harnesses from a donor, or go buy the MAF harness from RJM for $200. Once you have those, you have to re-pin the EEC connector at the firewall.

A MAF upgrade is not easy, but the benefits if you do it right are well worth it. If you find yourself an EEC that is MAF with a J3 port for tuning, you can pretty much upgrade the engine as much as you want, tune it and it will run just fine.

Here is the RJM harness:

Here is what a J3 port looks like:

And here is a wealth of knowledge on fuel injection and MAF stuff:
