Leaking tranny fluid

72 with the C6.

Now this ole girl has leaked fluids from the day I bought her. Mostly motor oil cuz the pan gasket is probably the original.

I don't drive this rig a whole lot. It's kinda like the neighborhood everybody gets to borrow it truck to haul stuff. Anyway, the trans will leak every now and then and I have to get up under there and tighten the pan bolts and that usually fixes it.

Had to add 4 qts the other day. I drove it a few miles away and back. When I parked it I looked under it and it was pouring tranny fluid from that little drain hole where the bell housing meets the engine block. From what I know about tranny's all that's in there is the torque converter right? How would a torque converter leak?

Can anyone helpa bruthu out?

fluid leak

QMAN, In addition to the front seal , the front pump "O" ring as well as all of the seals and gaskets have served their time. Cheapest fix, a bedpan to catch the oil and repour thru a filter. Otherwise pull it for a correct repair and rebuild. Since it seems to be a loner to friends and neigbors, try taking up a collection.
Good Luck, Kenny

leak repair

QMAN, If the transmission is not slipping and the pan is not filled with metal parts you can reseal it with the help of a good repair manual. Or if you know of a reputable mechanic just bring it to him after you pull it. In the long run this will save the most time, tears, blood and $. Kenny

If you keep cranking on the pan bolts , you probably have destroyed the pan gasket making the leak worse .
buy a filter and pan gasket kit and change it (don't over tighten the bolts or you'll destroy new gasket too)

Again, thanks bros.

I don't crank on the pan bolts. Just every now and then they're a tad loose so I have to get em right.

Sucker has no shavings in the pan and it shifts like silk.

Good Luck, Kenny
2X Kenny. There is an o-ring, gasket, and the torque convertors front pump seal there needs changing. Easy to do if you have the means to pull the tranny.
I cracked up on the "try taking up a collection" line!

All three separate from Ford. I do not know about the aftermarket world.

C6AZ7A136A gasket
C6AZ7A248B o-ring
F2VY7A248A seal this part still available from Ford

If you don't get them aftermarket and want these genuine Ford let me know. I'll do a locate on them for you.

I know, this is an old thread . . . but it's mine.

I'm finally gonna seal this puppy up. On quick question. When I shift this trans into drive (or reverse) it takes 3-4 seconds to engage. Is this a sign of something wore/broke/etc or is it what all C6's do?

Hesitation is a sign of low fluid, clutch wear or trash/contamination in the hydraulic circuits.

Transmission fluid should be checked with the engine/transmission running and at operating temperature so that the transmission isn't over-filled.

It would also be good to check and make sure there's no leak in the vacuum line/modulator.
