Hi guys. I have a 99 v8 with a 8" lift. I just added a front leveling (mini spring pack) to replace the lifting block (death trap). Anyways after I installed the 2" spring pack and removed the 1.5" block the truck will not go in to 4wd. Did I do something wrong? I did not unhook anything. I just unbolted the spring and shocks, lowered the axle down, then installed the new springs. By the way it has the warren aftermarket manual hubs (lock or free). I can hear the t-case engaging and the light says its in 4wd. Help what did I do?
did the front drive shaft spline come apart when you dropped the front axle? it could have and now the rubber boot is holding it together but the splines are not engaged
Thanks for the quick reply scaler. OK so how do I go about checking the drive shaft to make sure it did not pop out? And if it did how do I go about fixing it. I am not sure if it is the stock length (used truck).
You look at the front driveshaft where the rubber boot is, and remove the clamps to see if its disconnected. Im pretty sure 8" lift is the mark for new driveshafts, so hes probably on the right track
My suspicion is that you pulled a vacuum line apart and you have a hub (or hubs) not engaging. One hub out means no power to either wheel. I would think if the driveshaft had separated, it would have self destructed the first time you attempted to engage 4WD.
OK so I got underneath the truck and the front drive shaft spins freely with my hand in 2wd. In 4WD it's locked in and can't be spun. I know it's suppose to act like this but would it still do this if it popped out?.
Also the left u joint spins freely when unlocked and locks in when the hub is turned to locked. The right side seems to Always be locked in. Think this is a separate issue.
Just a question, but were there any issues with the 4 wheel drive before you did the leveling kit? Also did you pull down the boot on the drive shaft to make sure it was all still locked in?
I have only had it in 4wd 2 times prior. Both times it seemed to have slipped when it first went in. After locking the hubs and engaging the switch it jumped or clanked a few times when power was applied. After that it was fine for a few hrs offroading. and i have not pulled the boot down yet. I will look at that tomorrow. Will I notice right away if it's still locked in? Never looked at a drive shaft very much..
You will know right away if the shaft is not connected. You would think that if that was the case and it did come apart and when you tried 4 wheel the first time the top of the shaft would spin and the bottom would not ripping that boot right off unless its loose and was sliding which is possible.
Makes me wonder if these is a different issue. But I would check that boot just to rule it out before you start ripping things apart.
Do this check when you have time. I also changed my hubs to manual hubs.
With the truck 4x4 switch turned to 2WD lock the hubs and pull the truck forward or back a little and see if the front drive shaft spins. I'm wondering if you have an issue with the transfer case.
