need more horses!!
The best thing you can do for V10's is Mikes' tunes and gears with 4:30's being the favorite with stock size tires.
have a K&N cold air- it did nothing but cost me money almost 400 for the kit and what 25 dollars for the junk recharge kits plus a full dya to clean the filter let it dry COMPLETELY and then re-oil and let it drip off so my motor wont suck it back in. Took it off and put stock intake back on now it takes me one minute to buy a 30 dollar Purolator Purone air filter once a year
helix throttle spacer- i have no idea what this did what MPG or power it added nothing but again made my wallet 80 dollars lighter. It now sits on the work bench
Gibson stainless headers- only did this because i was so worried about the stock exhaust manifold bolts rusting off and causing me huge problems down the road. The truck had 36,100 miles when i ordered them and my stock stuff still looked brand new on my truck, i removed the stock nuts and removed the stock studs and covered them with silver high temp anti seize and installed the headers with ALL THE STOCK HARDWARE i now have 114k on the truck with stock anti seize covered studs with no problems of rusting apart at all. headers i didn't feel anything or hear the exhaust any louder YET AGAIN i was 600 dollars in the hole
exhaust shop dual exhaust- 3"x16" long cherry bomb into 2 1/2" mandrel bent dual side exit SOUNDED FLIPPIN AMAZING! But the droan finally took its toll on my towing my 20ft CC from NJ to Lake George two summers ago..... got home cut the exhaust off and install a Borla single exit 3" exhaust still sounds good but no droan
removed stock cat- why i did this i have no idea only thing i can say is i was just young and wanted that deep old school exhaust sounds, i didn't get anything other than headaches from the exhaust fumes. I now have a magnaflow cat installed cost me twenty for the pipe to replace the stock cat and now three hundred for the new magnafloe cat and stainless 3" exhaust i now have installed...........
spd y-pipe- i don't like have they designed this but there is no way to do it without having a pipe expander to get rid of the couplings BUT after i welded it in i can say i actually felt the truck move better and it actually helped with towing. More because it removed that CRAP 1" reducer Ford installed........ flippin Ford engineers
4.30 gears- BEST THING I HAVE EVER DONE PERIOD, since i keep 33" tires i should have gone with 4.56 gears the added low speed grunt is really nice and the highway rpm jump is very very little. I wont install 35" like i want because i know i will not like the truck again and I'm not spending another 2k for a second gear swap
had 4.88 gears installed so i can have my 4" lift and 35's
kept the truck stock and saved all that money from pointless add ons that are all sitting in my garage collecting dust that i cant sell for half of what i paid for them
The SPD will ad some power (confirmed on the dyno) but the down side is exhaust "flutter" and a weird sound out the tailpipe at certain rpms. The stock manifolds have a junk design and the even fire V10 makes the dumb flutter sound.
I have Doug Thorley headers on mine and the most noticeable power increase is in the low end. But they are expensive.
As for the Flowmaster exhaust and K&N. I have had the Flowmaster Force II on my truck for about 5 years. Just replaced the first steel kit with the new stainless kit due to tailpipe rust. New stainless is a nice kit. The FM70BB2 and FM50BB have plenty of capacity for the V10 and sound nice. Not much power increase but it is a nice aftermarket system.(best to spring for the stainless) As for the K&N I have had the FIPK II for years already. Never any issues, intake is checked for dusting/oil regularly. No dust no issues. They are not for really dusty use. I am running the K&N filter. Not much of any increase in power with the system either and there is is an increase in intake noise.
The tunes I have take in account the mods I have.
In summary. Buy the 5 star tuner with tow tunes if you have an auto trans. Make sure the rest of the truck is mechanically sound.(fresh spark plugs, clean filters, and etc) Check for exhaust leaks at the manifolds. Any leaks before the O2 sensors can hurt power. Changing exhaust manifold gaskets is a pain in the *** especially if you have broken studs to deal with. But it is a pain in the *** that has to be done.
If the tuner is not enough for you time to look at a gear change.
I have a 5.4 (2 valve with 4.10 gears) and BARELY get the 14.3 average that I have. I estimate I get 16-17 highway and 10-12 city. Best mileage ever was mixed city/hwy long trip at 15.7mpg. My average week to week varies from 14.7-14.3 with the occasional 12.5-13.5 mpg when I see some 4x4 beach driving / fishing. Half of the time I am loaded with near a ton of materials/equipment in the bed of the truck for work. Having heard many complaints about a "lack" of power, I was worried but just DO NOT SEE it. Maybe it is the 4.10 gearing, but my truck can smoke the tires (new transforce 265/75R16 e rated) on dry pavement and i is just fine passing and when I need it to get up and go. I DO NOT drive fast, MAXIMUM 70 on the highway (90% I cruise at 62-65) and rarely take it over 2000-2500 rpm when accelerating around town or onto highway.
I suggest you do not drive your four ton truck very fast either, I see alot of accidents around here in the rain with big trucks and their wide tires that are PERFECT for hydroplaning. Last years snow storms, I saw over forty trucks in a ten mile stretch of road stuck, most were at turns in access roads where you could just see they were "overdriving" their vehicles to get stuck in those spots. I don't pull idiots out of their self created messes. I did pull almost a dozen cars out that morning, and even got a phone number and a date (and something else) for my troubles. I didn't pull out any trucks.
Asking for 17mpg from a v10 ford is silliness.

17 out of a v10 either.
