New tire thoughts?

I need new tires for my 06 expy EB 4WD 5.4
I have been looking at the 265/70-17 General Grabber HTS on tread depot for $130 each and they have a $70 mail in rebate on 4.
Have also been looking at the Firestone Destination LE 2 on tire rack for $143 each.

These are only my first thoughts. I'm all paved roads, little snow here in central PA and I trailer my Harley a few times a year which I normally just increase tire pressure. Any other thoughts would be appreciated.

I don't know what your situation is, but I prefer to run the Michelin LTX A/S. P255/70R18. I have good luck and smooth ride for the entire life of the tire. Which is usually about 80k miles. Good luck on your choice.

I appreciate the comments. You are the second person to recommend these. I certainly wish I could run 18 inch tires. I will look into where I can see the best price for these.

I use Michelin LTX M/S and now MS2 on my three Fords - F150, Escape and Expedition. I just put four MS2 on the F150. I have a friend that runs the A/T2 but it is more aggressive for off road needs, not sure on the price point difference.

Highly recommend the MS2 for quiet smooth ride, excellent wet grip and very sufficient in the snow (4x4). Michelin has a $70 rebate now for four-tire purchase.

Since you are in "central PA", if you are anywhere close to York, Nello Tire is a Michelin dealer and excellent to work with. Good luck with your choice, never an easy decision, but don't buy on (low) price, its not worth the (dollar) savings.

I would leave the truck at home and ride the Harley....

Oh, and I second the Michellins, in whatever tread pattern you need...

Michelins have never let me down, great traction, great lasting. Worth the premium price.

I also recommend the Michelin LTX. Made the mistake of replacing a set with the BFG Long Triail last year. Local tire shop was offering a great deal on them. I'm counting down the days waiting for these things to wear out so I can mount he Michelins again. Ride quality and handling is second to none!

Since dumping the lousy OEM Continentals, I've have Michelin LTX and Uniroyal Laredos on my Expy in 10 years of ownership. Both were great (Uniroyal is owned by Michelin), with the LTX having a stiffer sidewall and thus better for towing.

Recently I bought a set of Michelin Latitudes - after a $70 rebate I was out the door for under $800 for the 265/70/R17, and have to say that in wet, dry, and non-snow conditions they ride better than any tire I've had on this vehicle. Light towing is not a concern, but if you are going to be doing some heavier towing, stick with the LTX.

I've had Yokahama Geolander AT tires for 6 or 7 months. So far no complaints. My wife likes how they drive in the snow and rain. Before that I had General Grabbers. They were pretty good but didn't last the full advertised mileage.

Don't forget that BFG is also owned by Michelin. My Expy came with the crappy Continentals, then I mounted a cheaper set of Mich's, then went to the Yoko Geolander and I now have the BFG's.

The Mich's were a short lived LTX that didn't last on the market or on the truck. 30K and they were done. The Yoko's lasted about 40K and they were kaput.

Hopefully the BFG Long Trails will do better. My truck is a 4x2 and never tows. No need for an aggressive tire.

Good luck on the BFG's. I went all in and did two sets on my Expeditions at the same time and the first set was shot at 30. The second set will not make it through the winter with just about 32 on them. Fool me once, back to Michelins where I typically get 50 out of a set.

I have 4 vehicles in my family and all have Michelins. The 3 SUVs (Expedition and 2 Trailblazers) all have Michelin X Radial LT or LT2. I routinely get 6 years out of them and I end up replacing them due to age long before the tread ever wears out. i do keep them properly inflated and rotated though. Would not buy anything else..
