Same problem here. Sonus Chrome Polish and some elbow grease every year at least once or twice. I don't like the looks of it but I am also getting the same problem on my rear bumper - more Sonus. I think one of my projects this winter or next spring is AMP power steps to eliminate the Lariat side steps.

Is there any common theme, here? My 2011 doesn't have this problem, but I live in south Texas where road salt literally does not exist (we are screwed on those occasions when the roads freeze over).

The salt and pot ash isn't as harsh as the chemical deicer's they are using more and more. That stuff is so awful. I wish they would ban all of it and just use sand and plows.

My Lariat steps still look like new as well, but we don't have all the road chemicals to deal with during the winter here in East Texas.

In addition I have the other style chrome steps that have the two large plastic pads so this type doesn't have all those holes with the plastic protrusions to collect road debris.

For some reason Ford installs two different style chrome steps, and the type my truck has was one of the reasons I selected when purchasing my truck.

I had the round style, chrome steps on my last truck (F150) for 5 years and never had a bit of trouble with the finish on them.

I hope this pair lasts more than 12,000 miles or 16 months (truck was purchased new May, 2012). The first pair only made it through a single winter. (My bumpers are perfect)

Mine are still OK at three years, 50,000 miles.
I haven't inspected them closely lately though.
In the rare ice down here, they sand the pavement and only salt bridges so things stay nice for awhile.

My main problem with the Lariat running boards is that they are slippery as hell when they get wet or snowy.

Yes and with the space between the door, they are unsafe and should be replaced with ones like the XLT gets. I had them put on my truck and reinforced with 2 of the crome board mounts, gussets and steel spacer to the lip on the body. Now I need a shield for my water separator. The standard King Ranch gets the same boards with lights, why not the Lariat and in Super Cab?

Have that - it doesn't matter. Rock chips leave small blemishes and then they get small rust spots- same with rear bumper - winter chemicals on roads exacerbates the problem.

Same here. I've had mud flaps installed since the truck was new, and I've had the corrosion since before the truck saw it's first winter.

I believe that dirt roads are the culprit here. Around these parts they use chloride on dirt roads for dust control. When it rains, these roads develop a layer of soup on them that turns into a mist when driven on that completely coats the running boards, as well as the sides and bottom of the truck.

I do make an effort clean it up ASAP, but I'm not gonna pull the hose out at 11:00 PM while it's still raining. And when it rains day after day... I'm just SOL!

Looks like the same damage that mine had. I read your other thread (I never leave the 6.7 section) and don't really understand why this was not covered for you.

I have it on 1 board, not the other. passenger side. 2011 haven't checked to see if it's covered yet....but since I have 70k on truck, I'm not holding my breath....

Hi folks,

If you're concerned about the chrome on your truck, drop by your dealership so they can get it diagnosed and documented. Your dealership's service manager will be in the best position to determine whether or not any repairs need to be made; if you need any additional assistance you can always shoot a PM my way. I'll be happy to do what I can to help. Be sure to include your name, best daytime phone number, mileage, VIN, and preferred servicing dealership in your message.
