Truck went into limp mode then fine.

Hi all, Truck has 107000,2006. 6.0 Was driving pulling a flatbed trailer(empty) and I heard a little sound from under the hood. Then the wrench light came on in the dash and truck went to limp mode. Drove it the rest of the trip into Billings. Shut it off for two hours and it started right up and the wrench light was gone and it ran fine. Drove home 60 miles pulling a loaded flatbed. Any suggestions as to what is going out? or just a hiccup. Scan gauge 2 said it had no codes.

Thanks

The SGII may not be able to read the wrench light codes, but if the light came on it stored a code.

You can cruise by autozone and have them pull the codes for you.

I had a 2006 that did this. At the time I didn't know but it will set the wrench light if the temperature differential is too high between oil temp and coolant temp. It manifested later with low coolant and overheating due to a leaking egr cooler and (probable) clogged oil cooler. It did not set any codes at all that I could read with my Equus 3160. The wrench also went away every time you would shut off the truck and restart. It was intermittent however and usually tripped the light after about an hour ir so driving at speed. I did not have IDS at the time so not sure if it set codes that IDS would pick up.

Mine also did something similar while towing on a grade, then cleared up and was fine. It turned out to be a clogged oil cooler. Dealership determined this when I brought it in and had it checked out... Use your scangauge to check deltas.

I guess I thought that a previous one said that my scan gauge II would not read but I could have them read. So, does the wrench light not hold any codes. If not what do you do to find out what the problem is. It has done it the last two times I have driven it... Under load, heavy throttle.
Any suggestions

Again...what are the EOT and ECT temps when it does this? My money would be on a clogged oil cooler.

You have a scangauge, you'll need to look at it.

Try taking it to be read when the cel is ON! and do NOT turn the engine off, so the cel stays on.

Well, today when I ran it (not with a trailer) the temp outside was 94 degrees, EOT was at 216-217 running down the road @ 75-80mph. I don't know if this is normal range or not. I won't have the trailer on for a little while. I don't know if this tells anybody anything. On the ECT I don't see that on my gauge. I will look in to that.

Thanks

ECT (engine coolant temperature) is probably fWT or cWT on your Scangauge meaning water temperature in fahrenheit or celsius. It's preprogrammed already.

IMHO that's a "high" oil temp for 94* ambient at 75-80 mph. It's not outrageous, but if your ECT is only running around 193 then you'll get a wrench light.
