Truck to ID plate discrepencies

I finally got my truck today!!! I am so geared up I don't know where to begin! I am a little puzzled, however, about some of the things I'm seeing. Ok, here is the ID plate info:

F25V5P15945
production code - 24B45284Y
color code - C

Now the truck has a 5-bolt hub...not 6 or 8 but 5. Were 5 bolts used on a 250? Or did someone do a switch on the ID plate? Weren't the ID plates pop-rivetted on? Mine is screwed in. I am defintely in need of some guidance on this one!!

George, where exactly was the VIN stamped on the frame on your truck?

Thanks, Daniel.

OK. Let's start with the tag that's screwed to the door post. Data below is from the Parts and Accessories Catalog.

F25V5P15945

F25 - F-250 standard truck
V - 272 medium duty 2V V-8
5 - 1955
P - Twin Cities (St. Paul) assembly plant
15945 - consecutive unit number (starts at 10001)

Paint code C was not used in 1954 or 1956. In 1955 it was used for - "Aquatone Blue"

The 5-lug wheels were used on the F-100 from 1953 through 1956. The F-250 used an 8-lug pattern in the same years.

On my truck, the VIN was stamped on the top of the passenger-side frame rail about 16 inches back from the center of the front axle. If you can find it and post it, we might be able to give you a better estimate of what you've got.

Well, back to one of Georges favorite topics.

If it is truly a 55 250 the WB is 118", a F100 is 110".
In 56 the F100 had both lengths available.

Now, isnt the 250 frame dimensionally larger than the 100? If so and the VIN is obscured that should be a clue.
The 250 also has a different rear end as well as spring options. The 100 used 6 and 9 leaf. The 250 has 9, 11 and 12 leaf.

Dont overlook the possibility that someone put in a 9" rear either.

The pics in your gallery are from ebay right? Lets see some new pics! The owner might of pulled the vin tag off at some point(maybe to paint) but as far as I can remember they were pop rivieted. Although does the 1955 mean it was a 56' model made in late 55? Anyways good luck and it looks to be a fun project! -4speed

Ok Gents, the mystery has been solved. I was just barely able to stick my big head b/t the tire and the fender to get a look at the frame rail. The numbers I was able to find were:

F10V6P18038

The springs also are 9-leafers all the way around. So I definitely have a 100 from 56, built in St. Paul.

I am working on new pics as well. I'll keep y'all posted on the pics, plans. etc.

I'm glad you got the info straightened out. Now you can get going on the project for real. I'm just sorry it wasn't one of the "more desirable" F-250s, like mine.

Dont you just love what prior owners do to our effies?

So someone dropped a 55 250 cab on 56 F100 rails. Doesnt suprise me at all.
What are you going to register/title it as? It might be time to buy a F100 ID plate off of E Bay and "lose" the frame numbers.
Some states are a royal PITA when it comes to getting an oldie on the road.

The cab is definitely a 56. So I do think that the cab and frame go together, however, the guy I got it from got it from a guy whose brother owned a junkyard. I think the easier swap would have been a decent ID plate from door post to door post, rather than a whole cab, don't you? Now as far as what I can do about a title or registration, that remains to be seen. I KNOW that Louisiana is a royal pain when it comes to things like this.

Now I'm confused!

The VIN plate on your first post is for a 55 F250, are you saying someone put that plate on a 56 F100 cab?
Where is it located, on the post or in the glovebox? A 55 plate ONLY belongs in the glovebox.

Yeah, I know about some of those states. Before last year I had guys sell me their vehicle on paper and then I would get a NH title and transfer it back to them.
There was no checking #, etc.

They tightened up the loopholes so its a lot harder to do now. However we still get quite a few that bring their vehicles up here to get the VIN actually looked at and then go for the NH title which they use to transfer back in their home state.

The things we do for our toys!

The plate is on the door post. There was never anything in the glovebox. Weather permitting tomorrow, I am going to take about 30 pics.
