Backwardly compatable?

Thanks for the insight on getting a newer bed to fit on an '81 truck, but I was wondering if any earlier parts fit (anywhere). I have a line on a good running '81, but the body really sucks. I can find a lot of '78-'79 stuff, but the newer stuff seems to be a little rarer. Maybe put the old stuff on the newer ('81) chassis??

Thanks again,
Stan

Backwardly compatable?

I don't see why not. I was thinking about building a later F-350 4X4 chassis with max lift, and giving it an F-1 cab and bed...

Tell you what - do what I did when I started my 82 F-100 project.

I looked over everything I thought would be important to know about how the engine mounts were set up, and then I did a tour of the area junk yards to look on partly dis-assembled trucks.

The same can be done as far as cab bolts -

Check their locations, measure between them, and go compare.

It seems to me that even if they are off a bit, it should be possible to come up with a way to adapt for any differences.

Backwardly compatable?

Wow that was quick!
While I know you can make anything work with enough time and/or money, I was hoping for something a little closer to "bolt-in". I'm hoping to get a driver and improve on it (for the next few years, probably...).
How did your F100 turn out?

Backwardly compatable?

1980 was the changeover year for body styles, and frames. So, no, late 70's body parts and motor mounts won't fit on an 80's truck. Major components will change out- engines, transmissions, axles. Anything from 73-79 is a direct bolt up within those years, and anything from 80-87 should be the same, with pieces such as the dash, bed front clip, etc. able to trade out up to 96.

Minor correction:
The '92-96 firewall is too different for the dash or any large part of it to interchange with '80-91.
