Last Weekend I replaced the Radiator, Thermostat, and hoses in my Aerostar 90, 4.0L. Today, i put in the new front heater core, did a radiator flush. Flushed that out twice, then put in the final mixture of AntiFreeze with everything looking good.
The car was idling and I was checking hoses when my wife yelled it was leaking badly under the middle. I looked under and water was flooding out. After extensively trying to see were it was leaking I finally saw that the water was comming out behind the belt pully on the water pump.
I am guessing the flush cleared some stuff out and boom the water pump said how about me. I have taken back out the radiator, fan guard and removed the fan clutch, blade and belt pully.
Tomorrow morning I will replace the Water Pump with a new one as well as the fan clutch. Anyone who has done the water pump, I would appreciatte any hints.
I have the new pump, gasket and gasket sealer. Any gotchas I should be aware of.
I would seriously considr a ford replacement fan clutch. I went through tree napa ones on a 94 explorer i owned, been there done it solved it with a factory part.
i replaced my water pump this winter. sounds like you have the hard part done, getting to it. i would take some time to clean the front of the engine and area for the water pump gasket it will help keep things clean as you install everything, also make sure the thermostat is in the correct way...the lower heater hose connection onto the pump was difficult to get to and tighten. i replaced all clamps with new ones. ...i also replaced my fan clutch, i got one from auto zone. its still ok, but i would imagine ford part is better. good luck rick
one did not work at all. the other two were engaged when cold, and went in neutral when hot. basically backwards. i think the differenc in price was only sround 25.00,deffinitly not worth the aggrivation.
Any one need a new 4.0 Ford Motorcraft water pump, thermostat & gasket? Please check the classifieds as I sold my 93 4.0 and have these parts laying around.
