play in rear bearings

I have a clunk in the wheels the bearings are worn out . are the axles bolted in or "C cliped"in. what is the best way to remove the bolt thru the pinion shaft to push axle in to remove clips. I did an axle seal on an explorer this week and the bolt broke. Help there has to be an a better way. not my van all I drive is full size with 9" rear

Same set up on the 7.5 as the Explorer. Axles held by C-clips. Heat the threaded end of the bolt with propane torch to soften the threadlocker for easier removal. You can purchase "repair bearings" for the rear that are offset, so the new bearing does not ride in the old, worn area of the axle shaft.

Make sure the 'clunck' you hear is not a loose upper or lower bolt on the shock mount. Not unusual on these vans and the sound precisely mimicks a worn bearing. Take few turns with the ratchet and a drive first before tearing into the rear end.
