bad water pump?

my 89 F-350 seems to be building alot of pressure in the radiator, i havent noticed any leaks, and the bearing seems fine on the pump but i cant tell if its circulating coolant. with the cap off and idling coolant will over flow, with cap on tight the hoses get hard. the temp gauge runs where it always has before i started to notice this so maybe im just overreacting? thx for any tips/advice

Does it build pressure right away when you start the engine? That sounds like a bad head gasket.

Otherwise, all sounds fine to me.

You might just replace the radiator cap, I would say test it but most people don't have a pressure tester laying around.. Besides the cap is cheap, your old one may not be holding the "correct" pressure.
