What did I do wrong?

86 F150 302. Installing a Jegs 4bbl intake manifold. When I set the manifold down on the gaskets and ran down the bolts I can see the top of a hole in the top center of the head on each side. It is like the manifold or gaskets aren't completely covering the head. I used a punch to make sure the holes lined up. If I had to guess I would say that the gaskets are down too far, but I am not sure. I appreciate any assistance y'all can give.

I think what you are describing is normal, but how about posting a picture. It always helps if we can see what you are talking about.

Perfect. That is normal - assuming you have the same thing on both sides.

I do have exactly the same thing on both sides. Thank you. Now I don't have to R&I the manifold again.

It isn't too hard to get the intakes on cocked. Been there, done that recently. But if you have the same thing showing on both sides you are good.

Yeah I noticed that if I tightened down one bolt too much it would shift, so I tried to be even. One side shows slightly more than the other, but it is slight.

I use studs, made out of long bolts with the heads cut off, to help align the manifold. But even then you have to be careful and take it down evenly.

If I ever have to do this again I am making a mental list of things I could have done differently.

The studs really help if you are using RTV instead of the cork or rubber seals at the front and back of the manifold where it hits the block. With the RTV you don't want to move the manifold sideways or front/rear once it touches the RTV, so the studs prevent that movement.

I would check it with some carb cleaner or brake cleaner after you get it back together. GAry and I played heck with my wheezer performer. It didn't seal right the first time.

Yep, that's the one. But I'm not sure I would suggest all-thread for studs as the threads provide places where the manifold can catch. I like using long bolts with smooth shanks. Run them in so the threads are hidden and the manifold will be less likely to bind.

As for checking, you also have to watch for coolant leaks as the W has coolant passages on the ends of the manifold and they can leak if mis-aligned.

Sure. I am always paranoid about leaks. I will probably check it 100 times after I get it running again. On a side note. I plugged the smog tube holes, but do I also need to plug the smaller holes that bolted the smog tube in place?

No, the small holes aren't drilled into the exhaust, they are blind.
