I am looking to replace the tired 1974 351W in my 54 with a non-roller 351W out of a 1996 van. Can I use my intake, distributor, fuel pump and timing gear cover off of my 74 351W. Is there a link on this subject? If anyone has any experience with the above options I would appreciate your input.
A 1996 van will be a roller cam unless somebody has previously pulled the roller engine out and replaced it with a pre-1994 5.8. A 1996 E250 was the donor of the roller 5.8 I swapped into my 1994 F150 5.0 truck.
I wouldn't worry about it being a roller or not. Strip the engine basically down to the block and heads, Then bolt on all the external stuff off your 1974. Assemble and drive.
Couple gotchas. The later heads will likely have EGR ports in the rear which will be open for older use. You'll want to block them off. Ford sells threaded inserts for these, Twisted Wedge also. Some folks have found some large size bolts fit them too.
The later engine won't have the drive on the end of the camshaft for the fuel pump. Be sure to swap all that AND the timing cover form the old engine. The drive "pin" in the end of the cam will probably be too short to engage the pump drive so you'll want to get the older pin also.
Might be some more issues I've overlooked, I doubt anything major. Maybe someone else will chime in.
