annoying ignition problem

I have a '77 f350 with the 460. When I turn the key, the engine cranks but won't fire until I let go of the key. If I hold the key in the start position, the engine just cranks, but no fire until I let go - and then sometimes no fire. I replaced the ignition switch when the old one would randomly shut off the truck so I assumed it just needed adjustment, but It seems no matter where it is, the new problem persists. Perhaps it is the ignition solenoid or a weak starter, but I thought I would ask for advice before spending money on parts.

As always, thank you for your assistance.

Try the module located on the driver's side inner fender.

Do Fords have separate "start" and "run" circuits like CJs do?

If the hot in start and hot in run wires to ignition module are swapped, it will do exactly that.

Sounds like your ballast resistor is open.
