Coolant temperature guage not working
It is an '84 6.9 that has been parked since last winter. The rear fuel tank was punctured along with various other issues that I have addressed since pulling the bed off. I have it running again and wanted to try getting the temperature gauge to work. When I started it yesterday, smoke come out of the dashboard with an electrical wire burning smell. I scared a mouse out of the dash a few weeks earlier so worry that something may be grounded or chewed on. I know the gauge was not working when I parked it. Where do I find the correct sensor or relay on the motor to begin troubleshooting this? There is no movement on the gauge at all when key is turned on. Is the dash a pain to get apart to see if there are problems here? This truck has had a hard life and is only used for farm work so not worried about making it nice. Rags are stuck in the lens openings for turn signal and other illumination points on dash so the light does not shine in your eyes and blind you if that helps you understand what I am working with.

The one that works the gauge is on the left.
Definitely consider getting an aftermarket gauge of some kind. Stock one is notoriously worthless.

I grounded the sending unit and it pegged the gauge. I had gambled on what I needed a few weeks back and replaced the one in truck with what I bought from auto parts store. I have a working gauge! I drove the truck around for a half hour and everything worked great. I got stuck in the river bottom and had to put in 4wd to get out. With no bed this thing has no weight and therefore no traction in the rear. Universals on front drive axle are shot so I guess I will fix them before I put bed back on. Thanks for the link to troubleshoot, I had this fixed within 10 minutes of reading your post.
