Diagnosing Temp gauge
I have an aftermarket electric temp gauge in my 76 F100 that works well. The aftermarket sender is using the intake manifold hole that the dash gauge originally used. My 390 Tstat housing has a place to screw in a sender, and I had the dash sender screwed into it. It seemed like it used to work, but for awhile now it hasn't. I haven't really worried about it much since I have a good aftermarket gauge that is working. Recently I've been fixing dash issues and upgraded my lighting to Blue LEDs. At the same time I've had a cooling system problem where I have the T Stat housing off. It seems like a good time to fix this small issue. Is there a test I can do to determine whether my dash gauge is the problem vs the sender?

Ground the wire that hooks to the sending unit.
If the wire is intact and the gauge works, it should hit the peg.
If the gauge hits the end of its range, the sender is bad. If the gauge does nothing, then the wire or the gauge may be faulty.
