Transmission Tunnel Differences

Did some quick searching and couldn't find an answer. Anyway I have a cab from a 1992 F150 2wd with a 302 and E4OD that I am putting on my 1995 F350 4x4 with a 351 and E4OD. The tunnels on the cabs are different. It looks like the 1995 cab has a bolt on tunnel cover and it is taller than the one on the 1992 cab. Is there any reason the 1992 cab will not fit without the taller tunnel? Other than cutting a hole for the tcase shifter there doesn't seem to be a clearance issue with the drivetrain I have in the 1995. Just want to clarify this before I cut the floor in the 1992 and don't have to.

That plastic trim around your 95's 4x4 shifter will NOT fit in the 92 cab since it doesn't have the transmission access panel. I went thru this with my 96 which doesn't have the access panel either. Went to my local yard and pulled a manual t-case to replace my electric-shift t-case with, along with the shifter and all it's linkage. Rebuilt the manual case, cut a hole in my floor, bolted everything in and was all happy and excited to have a real shifter, the 4x4 was working perfectly, everything was great. Well I went to put the trim on over the shifter and... the plastic trim piece was too tall.

Sure enough I looked the next time I was at the yard, the trucks with factory manual 4x4 have a taller trans tunnel and that trim piece won't fit the shorter tunnels. I tried to work some magic with my Dremel, but the difference in floorboard shape was too much. I broke the plastic off and used just the cab-side boot in mine, made my own outer boot (the one that keeps drafts out of the cab) and called it a day.

So the trucks with the manual shift tcase are the ones with the taller tunnel then? I wasn't sure if that was the reason or because of the heavier trucks with the 460 and the diesel engine with the bigger bell housing.

Update

An update on this. I put the 92 F15 2wd cab on the 95 4wd F350 chassis with no tunnel interference. The floor on the 92 cab had a spot for the 4x4 shifter to be cut out. I cut the hole and the trim and shifter fit perfectly.

Huh. That's great! My trim didn't fit, but I ain't sure what year truck it came out of... it was an OBS for sure though.

I re-did mine from what I posted above. Got a shift boot from a '79 and used a rubber mallet to shape the steel flange on the base to my cab floor. Looks awesome now!

Steve
as you found out
There is zero difference in the trans tunnels other than the hole for the 4wd shifter being there or not. No height difference , no width difference.

There was a difference in the tunnels from the original 95 cab to the 92 cab. The 95 had a taller tunnel than the 92. That is why I asked the question in the first place. IIRC there was a removable panel on the 95 tunnel. I am not sure why unless the diesel or 460 equipped trucks needed more room and they just made them all the same.

No. The tunnels are the same, but the REMOVABLE cover is different. There are different ones between autos, 4 speeds and 5 speeds

That would make sense. I guess what threw me on that is the 92 didn't have the cover. The floor was all one piece. Hopefully this will help others that may have this question.
