400 cid Engine in truck, valve covers off & I have loads of carbon deposits, worried about lubrication. Can i degrease the valves, etc, and rinse off with hose without disaster? I thimk valve compression is still good, measures Cold 122-134 psi Cold across all 8 cyl, tho i can't find specs online or in chiltons. Whaddya think about the degreasing in-place?
Thanks for the move; & i get email notification about the board i've taken part in, administrators like you can email me, i'll double check my profile, don't want more inbox email than that.
& whaddya' think about degreasing and rinsing the valves and headtop while in place? Can do w/o problems?
If you can get the oil pan off you'd probably be OK. Short of that, you'd have to plug off any passages leading from the valve cover area to the crankcase. You'll have to plug the drainback passages on the ends of the head and the holes around the pushrods. You don't want any crud getting into the oil.
For a reference... I had a customer with a 300-6 cyl. that was having oiling problems. 48,000 miles and never changed the oil. It was so sludged up that we had to take off the oil pan, valve cover and lifter cover on the side of the engine. Sprayed it down with degreaser and had to take the power washer to it to clean out the passages so the oil could drain back to the pan. Bolted it back together and all was fine.
After you do yours, do an oil change right away and another soon after to get any loose stuff out of there.
Hope this helps.
