without going into too much specifics to start, I was wondering what octane i will have to run. With iron heads open chamber my effective( dynamic) CR comes out to 8.07:1(9.5 static). this will change after I get done porting the heads( combustion face as well) and cc them. I am hoping this is some form of pump gas. i want to make extra sure this engine has 0 chance to ping during cam break in.
Octane is actually a combination of two factors. Power potential and anti detonation (pinging) High compression engines need both to create power and help with engine longevity. boosted engines can benefit from the added power potential, bet really need it for the anti detonation factor. This is why E85 has become so popular with turbo engines. It has an anti-det factor on par with 105-110 octane gasoline, whereas power potential is around 98 octane equivalent.
Nearly all modern engines can run on low octane fuel (84 octane is coming!! yikes) they ECUs can back off timing and add more fuel to compensate. You may not get your full 660hp from your GT500 if you run low grade, but its not going to blow it up
