Back up switch

Hey all

My back up lights don't work. No power to the light sockets when in reverse. Does any one know where the back up switch is for a 1978 4 spd. Warner T18?

How do you go about diagnosing the circuit?

Are the switches still available?

Thanks

The switch is up near the top of the tranny on the drivers side, next to the shifter tower. Check your fuse first it provides power to the radio, winshield washers, turn signals as well as the back up lamps. Also check and make sure the wiring plug is still in place on the tranny. Third check the 4 wire plug on the drivers side rear frame, it goes to the rear end lights. I had a short in mine and the back up lights would flicker.

OK, got underneath the rig and found the switch, it was right where you said it would be.

Then I saw the problem, the PO either cut the wires or they broke. The 2 wire harness stopped at the harness clamp. Well, while I was there, might as well check to see if the switch works. Got my multi meter and put it the south gear. wah la, 0 ohms. check in all the north gears thinking maybe that's why it's cut, nope, meter pegs out on all of those.

Now it's on to find the other end of the harness. Both of the wires are black with a red tracer, so I started to look in the general vicinity, and found 2 broken wires near the brake booster, a black with a red tracer and a yellow wire.

Turned the ign. on and checked the wires. one was hot , the other grounded. Hmmm maybe the grounded one goes to the b/u bulbs? So I connect the 2 wires together and took a peek at the b/u lights and they are on! So now all I have to do is add some wire to connect them together.

My guess they cut the wires maybe when they R&R the transmission.

Thanks again for your help!

Yeah typical shotty mechanic. Good on finding your problem. Just a lesson to always work on your own stuff then you know it was done right.
