Possible fix

As a mechanic for a construction company, we have two trucks with the same problem. One is an '89 F-800 with a 429 5spd, and the other is an '87 F-250 with the 4.9L and 4spd. The F-800 has eaten 6 or 7 starters in the last 3 years, and the F-250 just started last year, but is upto about 5. I had to replace the neg cable end on the F-250 last time, because it melted completely off! The only thing I've been able to do to stop the problem on both trucks, is to loosen and slide the electrical ignition switch toward the steering wheel, so that the truck will start by just barely turning the key. Seems the farther you have to turn the key to engage the starter, the more it wants to stay engaged, even if you turn it off and pull the key out. If you can find that spot where you just slightly turn the key to start, then let go, it seems to work fine.

I feel like an idiot pulled my starter and cables and found that both cables had been laying on the exhaust. Needless to day I'm replacing them and making sure the new ones can't come in contact with the exhaust.
